Repeal measures pensions and fee abolition carry in Potter County with a wet outcome. Adjournment delayed by Senate. Hous es tangle over bill in last moments. President praises solons for achievements during term.
The Senate delayed adjournment to next week after rescinding a sine die adjournment vote and adding a cotton loan amendment to the third deficiency bill. No record vote was taken. Senator Robinson urged a recess until Monday as House and Senate clash over a crowded legislative agenda including utility and tax measures.
Potter County voters backed repealing prohibition by 1839 to 1559 while old age pensions won 2978 to 409 and free textbooks narrowly led by 149 ballots. Abolition of the county fee system passed 5 to 1, with seven amendments totaling detailed in complete tabulations. Randall County reports strong pension support and mixed results on repeal. AUSTIN tractor accident leaves man dead after being pinned near Del Valle.
Texas voters rejected several amendments including the textbook provision for private schools and the state prohibition repeal. Chatterton will fly as central ship and pacemaker among entrants including Gladys O'Donnell Cecile Hamiton Mrs Sheehy and others.
A firebug ignited three fires in Denver including the $6,000,000 city hall and later threatened an office building. Fourteen buildings were struck in three days as fifty armed officers searched entrances and corridors for the culprit.
Grim forebodings fill Europe as Italy and Ethiopia mobilize for large scale actions while the British navy plans a ring around the Suez canal. Ethiopia trenches near the frontier are built under foreign guidance as Haile Selassie warns locals to seek shelter from air raids.
Plans for the semi annual Fall Style Window Show in Amarillo are complete. The Globe News and local merchants invite the public to view new Fall men and women’s apparel shoes accessories millinery and home furnishings in downtown store windows Monday evening. Live models, souvenirs, and music from Hugh Roden and the Three Jones Brothers will accompany the displays along Polk Street and the 600 block of Taylor Street. The event is free and suitable for family visitors with parking suggestions to walk and enjoy the show.
At Luke Field Hawaii during night air corps maneuvers a bomber failed to land and burst into flames killing Private Hicks G. Wilson. Three other air corps personnel escaped with injuries as Private James Monroe suffered severe burns and Major Arthur G. Liggett and Private Martin J. Costello were only slightly hurt.
Aug 24 a report from Sweetwater states Mr and Mrs D J Laine expect Mrs Wiley Post widow of the famed flyer to arrive Monday for an indefinite stay. The Laines live on a farm 20 miles southeast of town. In Longview Aug 24 Billie Ray Campbell 6 died from rabies after a cow bite. seven others bitten were advised Pasteur treatment was too late.
President Franklin D Roosevelt told American youth to unite and challenge the old order in a Milwaukee youth convention address. He attacked reactionaries of 1935 and urged reforms in social conditions health security and economic government without aiming at political critics.
Amarillo jobbers and manufacturers Association launched a campaign to raise funds for the Conchas Dam site purchase. Committees were named for a city survey by Monday night so Amarillo can join a Texas committee meeting in Santa Fe Tuesday to try to secure 35 000 acres for the nine million dollar dam project. A Tucumcari delegation met Amarillo Chamber of Commerce leaders and the Texas dam committee to outline plans led by James L Briscoe.
Bryson Corbett is held without bond in Albuquerque pending further investigation into the shooting of Edward G Thompson known as Te Thompson the playboy Dude ranch operator. Authorities say Corbett confessed to the shooting claiming Thompson broke up his home and no charges were filed before Monday.
President Roosevelt by executive order named Laurence J Martin of Virginia as acting administrator of the National Recovery Administration. He succeeds James L. ONeill who resigned.
A Fieldton two and a half year old, Edmund Barret Williams, died at a Plainview hospital from injuries suffered in a morning automobile crash near Olton. Four others were injured including S. R. Williams Jr in critical condition with a fractured skull and his mother with a broken arm. The Williams party, en route to Plainview for Primitive Baptists meeting, hit the rear of a slower truck on Highway 28 east of Olton. Funeral services for the child were set for Sunday at 4 PM with Amherst cemetery burial.
Atlanta Aug 24 Georgia's delegates to the Confederate reunion at Amarillo Texas will depart by special train September 1 and reach the Texas city the following night The reunion runs September 3 to 6 and will be held with the Sons of Confederate Veterans event.
Amarillo chapter backs a lean reunion with $10,000 underwritten and all teas and social events canceled. Tom W. Cotten, general chair, notes this is a departure from past reunions while promising top food lodging medical care and veteran focus for the Wiite Confederate Veterans event next week.
The general chairman stated arrangements were made for elaborate social functions at upcoming Confederacy meetings but were limited by conditions beyond central control. A letter was sent to all ladies on state generals lists regarding the changes.
Election returns show six Panhandle counties supporting repeal of state prohibition. Hutchinson led with a two to one margin, Potter and Gray also favored repeal, while Castro Carson Gray Potter and Oldham counties posted varied tallies with Oldham still incomplete at press time.
