A quiet crowd gathered at W. Lee O Daniel headquarters in Fort Worth as election night returns trickled in. James V Allred led O Daniel by about 7000 votes, prompting cautious optimism from supporters while O Daniel declined to comment until all votes were tallied.
Navy reports United States submarines sunk four Japanese non combatant ships and possibly one destroyer with another non combatant ship damaged. One merchant vessel fell in the Aleutians while other attacks occurred in the Western Pacific. Total Jap losses reach 60 ships sunk 16 possibly sunk and 15 damaged.

In the Democratic runoff primary Beauford Jester of Corsicana defeated Pierce Brooks of Dallas to secure a seat on Texas three man railroad commission. Other results listed show O Daniel Allred Beck Smith Hatcher and Nelson Pitts Coffee Ellis across multiple offices.
Jimmie Allred tops early returns against W Lee O'Daniel in Texas votes as supporters gather at the Bellaire Avenue home. The 43 year old former governor and judge voices cautious optimism, thanking friends and noting a potential photo finish as rural boxes come in.
In the Panhandle run off between July 26 and yesterday James V. Allred gained 2,147 votes to W Lee O Daniels 612 showing a four to one margin. In 13 counties Allreds total rose from 9 016 to 11 163 while O Daniels fell from 8 943 to 9 555. The state Democratic committee will canvass today's returns on Sept 7 at 1 30 PM. Salvage depot signs will be erected by local committees at fire stations schools or other public places for scrap metal deposits.
Amarillo civic leaders met with Riley Strickland, rents director, to outline a wartime rent control education program. Rents are frozen at the March 1 1942 level with a Sept 15 deadline for registration. landlords must file forms and may increase rents only after major capital improvements or converting unfurnished to furnished units. Substations at the main and San Jacinto post offices provide forms as the office assists landlords.
Congressman Gene Worley of Shamrock traveled via Amarillo on his way from Sydney Australia to Bonham to meet his week old son. He paused at the Mobilian to chat with Fd Halloway and said he would return soon to see Ann and the child.
The forecast calls for scattered showers tonight with cooler conditions Sunday morning. West Texas shows scattered thunderstorms Sunday across most of the region except the Panhandle and South Plains, with only slight cooling. New Mexico expects scattered afternoon showersSunday with cooler lower elevations in the east and somewhat cooler elsewhere. Precipitation last 24 hours totaled 0.25 inch.
In the Solomons, U S Marines killed 762 Japanese to 34 Americans over two actions. Admiral Nimitz praised General Vandergrift and the Marines for their gallantry and sacrifice in the engagements on Wednesday and Thursday.
Light to moderate rains fell across the Panhandle yesterday evening with totals up to three quarters of an inch. Kingmill and Dalhart reported the heaviest, while Canadian Hereford saw half inch and Amarillo a quarter inch. The storm began at 5 27 and the last thunderhead cleared at 6 20 with motorists noting heavy rain between Amarillo and Vega.
A Texas statewide election returns update shows U S Senator W Lee O Daniel leading James W Allred by 11 979 with 842 611 votes counted from 246 counties 134 complete. John Lee Smith won lieutenant governor Harold Beck lost in the treasurer race James Beauford Jester won the railroad commission short term. O Daniel's lead reflected 50 71 percent of votes as late totals split with Allred gaining earlier.
