Democrats and Republicans seek to widen territories for votes as campaign hits key issues of prohibition and farm relief. Smith and Hoover court farm leaders and dry regions while stressing religious tolerance and agricultural relief to win electoral votes in November.
Ephraim Coon a 75 year old farmer was badly lacerated in the right arm while mixing cotton in a gin at Appleby ten miles from Nacogdoches Texas today Doctors said amputation would likely be necessary for the injured right arm due to the severe wound The incident was reported by The Associated Press from Nacogdoches Texas on August 18.
Weather ahead for Amarillo and vicinity shows Sunday fair with West Texas partly cloudy and possible local thundershowers in the southeast. A broad trough brings showers to eastern New Mexico western Texas eastern Colorado and parts of Kansas with cooler readings in the upper Mississippi valley. Yesterday temperatures ranged from 63 to 74 degrees with .03 inches of precipitation.

Frequent radio messages from Parker Cramer navigator and radio operator of Bert Hassell's monoplane Greater Rockford at Burgess Battery station 9EK indicated progress on the second leg of the Rockford Illinois to Stockholm Sweden flight. Hassell and Cramer took off from Cochrane Ontario to Mt Evans Greenland at 11 12 a m.
Central Standard Time entries show a flight departing Cochrane Ontario for Mt. Evans Greenland covering about 1600 miles with stops over Nottaway Bay Ruppert House Eye Lake and Fort George in Quebec before reaching Apiskigamish Lake.
Remains of 43 sailors from the British submarine L-55 raised by Soviet Russia from Kaporsk bay have been coffined awaiting British instructions to ship to England. The L-55 was sunk in a naval engagement with Bolshevik war vessels nine years ago. the captain’s skeleton was found at the steering wheel.
The county tax rate for next year will be 75 cents, set by the commissioners. Potter County valuations rose by 24 million dollars, totaling 3514 millions. State rate cut to 64 cents yields combined 1.39 with county and state shares. With 38 million valuation, total income equals 549600, split 285000 to county and 254600 to the state. Three convicts, burned in a July 28 fire at Blue Ridge prison farm, were returned to the farm after recovery. Five others remain hospitalized. three inmates died. The blaze started when a lit match ignited movie film in the dining hall.

He urges a united front and discusses farm relief through joint committees, tariff revision, and inland waterways development amid a large Kansas crowd at the statehouse steps.
George Bibbs a former book keeper at First National Bank El Paso was remanded to jail in default of 3500 bond after arraignment on charges of embezzling 500 from the bank Complaint filed by Edwin Fore agent of the department of justice Bibbs to be moved to El Paso once a removal order is issued by the western division of federal court.
Waco Aug 18 Lloyd Martin pilot and S C Haralson passenger both of Waco escaped with minor bruises when their airplane crashed from about 100 feet at the Waco Municipal airport. The plane was demolished when the motor stalled after takeoff.
Amarillo taxi driver Lewis “Shorty” Avritt and a man believed to be Nolan McCaleb disappeared after leaving August 8 for a two to three day trip. Police note McCaleb used multiple aliases and has a criminal record, and no word has come since August 10. Avritt, 24, and McCaleb, about 33, were in a 1927 Buick Master Six with license 2635 and numerous clues point to foul play amid uncertain miles and abrupt silence from both men.
A civil appeals case set for 9 am Tuesday involves Walter Allen Stinnett and Clifford M. Braley over Braley’s eligibility for the 31st district attorney runoff on August 25. Allen argues Braley is not a Panhandle citizen, allegedly residing in Dalhart, while Braley disputes the charge as the docket advances.

John Newton Phillips Jr. editor of the El Paso Post drowned off Redondo Beach California as his fiancée Patty Buchanan watched. The couple had set a wedding date hours earlier after playing handball on shore. undertow swept him away and lifeguards recovered him ten minutes later with no revival.
