Government says Louisiana graft runs deep in oil scheme
Dallas August 18 U P O John Rogge assistant United States attorney general said the government has just scratched the surface of Louisiana political scandals. He spoke at the extradition hearing for Freeman W Burford a Dallas oil magnate indicted with ex governor Richard Leche and Seymour Weiss on conspiracy to violate the Connally hot oil act and defraud the government. The case centers on a production order boosting Rodessa field oil from 4550 to 20000 barrels a day and a Pelican Oil and Gas line sale to a Burford pipeline. Weiss allegedly took 48000 and later 100000 in commissions with proceeds to Leche. Burford promoter Weiss engineer, Rogge said. The pipeline was later sold to United Gas for 950000 after being a white elephant, Harris and Estes for Burford argued the indictment did not allege a federal offense.
