Vast Cape missile aims for moon orbit despite odds

The immense Cape launcher, central to Air Force plans, is expected to carry a satellite toward lunar orbit. Experts see a ten to one chance of success on first attempt, with a target orbit 10 000 to 50 000 miles from the moon, and would be pleased with partial achievement.

Senate backs Social Security bill after trimming aid

The Senate approved the liberalization measure by 79 to 0 after reducing the public assistance boost to 197 million dollars. The bill increases benefits by 7 percent and raises payroll taxes to fund immediate and long term insurance, sending it back to the House which passed it July 31.

Cool front cools Panhandle with storms in North Plains

The Panhandle sits on the rim of a cool front extending into Oklahoma. The Weather Bureau in Amarillo predicts a high near 91 today, down from 96 Saturday and 97 Friday. Civil Aeronautics Board opened an investigation into the worst Northeast airliner disaster in memory as 23 people mostly vacationing in New York were killed or injured near a Nantucket airfield.
