Countdown to the first U S moon rocket began as Douglas Aircraft Co technicians moved to the blockhouse for checkout. Forecasters predicted partly cloudy weather and observers expected liftoff soon after dawn while the three stage Thor Able vehicle remained in its red and white service tower.
The immense Cape launcher, central to Air Force plans, is expected to carry a satellite toward lunar orbit. Experts see a ten to one chance of success on first attempt, with a target orbit 10 000 to 50 000 miles from the moon, and would be pleased with partial achievement.
The Thor Able three stage vehicle is set to lift off from Cocoa Beach as thousands gather for the test. If launched during the optimum window next Sunday to Tuesday, the mission aims to reach 25 000 mph to escape Earth's gravity and relay moon data back to Earth.
The Senate ended an eleventh hour stalemate and voted by voice to move toward a House farm bill. Agriculture Committee Chairman Ellender signaled Senate passage is likely, sending the bill to the White House after pressure from cotton and rice interests.
The Senate approved the liberalization measure by 79 to 0 after reducing the public assistance boost to 197 million dollars. The bill increases benefits by 7 percent and raises payroll taxes to fund immediate and long term insurance, sending it back to the House which passed it July 31.
The Panhandle sits on the rim of a cool front extending into Oklahoma. The Weather Bureau in Amarillo predicts a high near 91 today, down from 96 Saturday and 97 Friday. A few thundershowers are expected, especially in the North Plains, with scattered light showers reported in northeastern New Mexico and near the Texas border.
Civil Aeronautics Board opened an investigation into the worst Northeast airliner disaster in memory as 23 people mostly vacationing in New York were killed or injured near a Nantucket airfield. The Convair crashed in fog, disintegrating on impact, with seven badly burned passengers evacuated to Boston and two hospitals.

In Bern Switzerland two Hungarian refugees fought a half hour gun battle at the Communist Legation as police tried to seize documents. Sandor Nagy 22 wounded critically Endre Papp 21 captured without a fight. Five other refugees were arrested outside the legation.
