Death Car Stolen Ties to Enloe Slaying Revealed

The car used in the shooting death of Charles C. Enloe near Wellington was identified as stolen from Anna Faye Brown of Oklahoma City. James Perry Dehart, arrested in the case, had joined Enloe en route to Amarillo. Enloe’s body was later buried in Roaring Springs.

Collingsworth Parade Opens Through Highway in Wellington

Collingsworth County showcased its through paved highway with a 30 minute parade in Wellington as crowds gathered. The event featured Two Minutes To Live an open air drama at Rocket Stadium and a fireworks replica of the Battle of Chateau Thierry. The day contrasted with yesterday's Old Settlers meeting and recalled pioneer road building by local leaders and citizen work hours.

Three Charged in Road Hijacking Near Socorro

Two Missouri youths and a 15 year old girl faced jail in Socorro New Mexico on charges of highway robbery after an attempted shootout with CCC guards and local officers. They allegedly hijacked Florida visitors Gladys Fawley Jane Dow dell and Mary Palmer near Datil leaving them stranded. $300 in cash and checks were recovered.

WPA Work on Dam Planned at Conchas Dam

Conchas Dam New Mexico plans a shift to WPA labor for the retaining dike project. An appropriation of one million dollars will fund roughly 400 to 800 WPA workers to construct a 6400 foot long by 98 foot high dike. Engineering is complete and rules are to be set in days, with 800 workers anticipated. A conference of New Mexico and Texas WPA officials extended plans.

Faint radio signals indicate six missing Soviets are safe somewhere near the Arctic as three planes carrying Russian officials depart Fairbanks to aid the hunt. Jimmy Mattern, famed American long distance flyer, joins the search after helping Levaneffsky rescue him in 1933.

Noted Author Dies In England At Forty Nine

Lieut. Col. Cyril McNeile 49 author of Bulldog Drummond died today in Pulborough England. He wrote under the pen name Sapper and was known for wartime adventure thrillers.

School board refuses to reinstate instructor charged over evolution claim

Laura Elms Morris, 43, denied teaching evolution but the Waynesburg Pennsylvania board found she abused students with an iron poker and mush ball bat. They ruled she disrupted order and allowed damage to the one room school. Morris invoked the State Teachers Tenure Act to contest dismissal.

Golden Anniversary Edition assigns famed writers to historic Amarillo era
