F E Townes of Houston addressed about 250 people in Houston praising or criticizing national and state leaders. He attacked Truman calling him a peanut roaster and urged the president to change course amid Dixiecrat organizing. Russian Teacher Case Blocked by Top Reds in New York

A New York Supreme Court justice reserved decision on a writ to free Russian teacher Osakana Stepanovna Kosenkina held in the Soviet consulate. Babe Ruth Rally Still Critical In New York Hospital

Babe Ruth 53, once Yankee slugger, remained in critical condition at Memorial Hospital New York after a relapse while being treated for pulmonary complications. A 7 31 AM CST bulletin reported slight rally with stronger pulse as doctors monitor his two year illness.

Five Die in B 17 Bomber Crash Near Berryton Kansas

Five of seven crew members died when a B 17 Flying Fortress crashed at the Grange fairgrounds Berryton Kansas on a training flight. Surviving crew were rushed to Winter General Hospital Topeka in fair condition. The pilot First Lt Dewey R Laney 25 of Amarillo was among the dead.

Family Of Three Hurt In Crash In Albuquerque area

A former Amarillo couple and their two children are hospitalized after an automobile crash near Los Lunas New Mexico Monday night. Mrs Mason suffers serious injuries including a compound leg fracture, broken right arm and jaw injuries. The Mason family moved to Albuquerque several years ago.

John W. Gilliam Sr Dies in Fort Worth at 72

John W. Gilliam Sr., 72, retired Western Union superintendent in Amarillo, died in Fort Worth after traveling with his daughter Mrs Marjorie Crump from Boulder. Born November 7 1876 in Dallas, he had a long telegraph career in Texas and New Mexico. He leaves two sons John Gilliam Jr of Dallas and Charles Gilliam of San Francisco, a daughter Mrs Irene Thompson of El Paso, and three sisters.

Beers Permit Suspended at West Amarillo Cafe

The West Amarillo Golden Light Cafe at 2908 West Sixth had its beer permit suspended for fifteen days after a conference between operator Ray and Texas Liquor Control Board district supervisor D W Lowe. The action follows the sale of beer to five juveniles who attacked and seriously injured Bobby Vaughn about two weeks earlier.

KFDA switches to 1440 frequency with higher power
