AFL to Consider Charter for Actors Union in Amusement Industry

An AFL executive council committee urged approving an international charter for the American Federation of Actors dominating all variety artists. The move risks a split with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes, which backs stagehands. The AAAA accuses IATSE of poaching actors while AAAA ousted the AFA over officer conduct, threatening a national artistic upheaval if rejected.

FDR Signs Social Security Bill in Federal Reform

President Roosevelt signed the social security revision act freezing payroll taxes at one percent for three years. The measure extends coverage to over a million additional workers and advances start of old age and survivors insurance to next January, while opposing the Connally amendment toward full federalization.

Farm Payments Must Continue for 1940 and Beyond

Government payments to farmers will be necessary in 1940 and for several years to come. I W Duggan of the AAA urged county agents that parity income must be maintained to support farmers and business. He warned world wheat prices are low, with only 12 percent of wheat sold abroad, and compared wheat to cotton parity issues. R M Evans of Washington, chief of the AAA, was the principal speaker at a noon luncheon with several hundred attendees.

Murals for Amarillo Post Office to Reflect Local Heritage

Amarillo plans 567 square feet of murals in the new post office lobby. Contest invites residents to specify local history events, industries, landscapes, and postal service development to shape the art. Six murals will be funded at 6500 dollars plus installation with anonymous entries and a local jury oversight.

Annenberg Indicted in Massive Tax Evasion Case

A federal grand jury indicted M. L. Annenberg and associates for evading more than 5.5 million dollars in income taxes and penalties from 1932 to 1936. The case cites 3.26 million dollars in taxes due and 2.29 million in penalties and interest, with 624 thousand paid in those years. Walter Annenberg and others are named as aiding and abetting.

Florida Attacker Revealed as Man With Bad Record

Thomas Cochran, 34, alleged to have lured two Miami girls for movie work, assaulted and murdered one, and to have preyed on women nationwide for 13 years. Police link him to rape cases, possible murder, swindles, impersonations. He deserted the army, abandoned a wife and two children, and posed as a federal officer and talent scout. He was hidden in a jail outside West Palm Beach to avert mob violence.

Boy Hangs On Rafter, Stops Heart in Elevator Shaft

In Greenville Ohio a 10 year old boy Ernest Hall fell into an empty building elevator shaft and hung by his elbows on a beam fifteen feet from the bottom. Doctors say his grip pressed a rib against his heart causing it to stop briefly before recovery.
