Amarillo couple learns their son Bill Davis a Navy Seabee is in the Aleutians after a newsreel shows him during a post movie screening. His brother Ernest, a naval air cadet in Kansas, identified the familiar figure in the reel.
Washington agri leaders push Vice President Wallace to head a new food production, price control and rationing agency. The plan would replace the War Food Administration and the Office of Price Administration, aiming to coordinate postwar farm programs with WW II needs and likely include Henry Wallace as top man.
Orley L. Miller 62, a Central Junior High School teacher, died Thursday. A funeral was held yesterday at 5 pm at First Presbyterian Church. Interment followed at Llano Cemetery with Black burn-Shaw Funeral Home directing. Survivors include his wife, two sons Francis P. Miller of Radford Virginia and John Laurence Miller of Amarillo, three daughters Jeanne Renfroe and Diane Renfroe plus Elizabeth Miller, a sister Bessie Britton of Solon Ohio, brothers George Miller Denver Ned Miller and Bernard Miller of Los Angeles, and three granddaughters Jeanne Renee Renfroe Diane Renfroe Martha Kay Renfroe.
A free lecture titled Christian Science The Religion of Joyous Attainment will be held at 3 PM Sunday August 22 in the high School Auditorium. Earl Mc Cloud c S B of San Antonio and a member of The Mother Church Board of Lectureship will speak. The First Church of Christ Scientist Amarillo sponsors the talk.
Hogs finished the week at 14.60, the highest since mid May. Choice steers gained while medium grades fell and sheep advanced during the week.
Dr K W Stouder of Iowa State College warns careful handling can save millions of pounds of meat. He cites 1941 federal losses of 140 million pounds from mishandling across hogs cattle veal and sheep, detailing bruising and unloading faults and urging farmers to reduce losses by improving loading, unloading, and care of livestock.
The annual home making teachers conference runs Wednesday to Friday, August 11 to 13, at the Senior High School Building. Registration starts Wednesday 8 to 10 AM on the third floor. The event is conducted by the homemaking division of the state board for vocational education in cooperation with the West Texas.
Amarillo public schools join eight conferences held statewide this month replacing the usual meeting. The first session in the high school library will be presided by Miss Gladys Armstrong of West Texas State Teachers College. State officials Josephine Parcarl and Ruth Huey will participate. all sessions open to the public.
Interior Secretary Ickes says $910,000 will be apportioned to states for wildlife improvements with states contributing 25 percent. The total federal aid available this year reaches $1,223,333. Michigan leads with $54,145, Texas $47,592, followed by New Mexico $19,691 and Oklahoma $16,531.
