Scorching Heat Reaches 100 Degrees At Weekend Peak

Blocker Loop Demonstrates Real XIT Brand History at Dalhart Reunion

Ab Blocker, 82, demonstrates the Blocker loop for XIT hands in Dalhart as the famous ranch reunion opens. He recalls branding cattle for the 3,000,000 acre XIT range and delivering the first herd to Buffalo Springs in 1885. The event gathers old trail drivers including Richard I. Cockrum and Col. XIT Reunion Focuses on Ranch Cowgirl Mac McBride

Twenty years ago Mrs. Roy McBride of 810 Kentucky Street rode the Buffalo Spring division of the old XIT Ranch. She helped brand and dehorn cattle, hunted at daybreak, and served as postman and roper. At the XIT Reunion she will recall her days, including a bold branding moment and seven weeks of coyote hunting with husband Mr. McBride, who praised her marksmanship.

Russians Drive Japanese From Hills Near Changkufeng

The Associated Press reports Soviet troops drove Japanese forces from territory near Changkufeng and isolated them on lofty hills west of Lake Khassan. Moscow warned Japan it will repel all attacks with artillery and air power. Litvinov said border clashes north of Changkufeng show Japan risks a broader conflict and urged end to repeated incidents.

Two Men Drown Attempting Lake Swim Near Canadian

Orval Hicks age 28 and Vernon Ritter 38, both of Pampa, died after trying to swim Onais Lake 28 miles east of Canadian. Hicks was recovered 30 minutes after going down. Ritter found by nine feet of water after hours of searching. Their bodies were taken to local funeral homes. services likely Tuesday in Pampa. Hicks married with no children. Ritter married with three children, born in and from Groom, Texas.

Tuberculosis Cure Study Hints At Starving Germs

Dr. C. H. Boissevain, head of chemistry for the Colorado Foundation for Research in Tuberculosis, reports a promising lead in starving tubercle bacilli by removing a fatty growth substance from the human body. He notes the substance, found in egg yolk and in guinea pig organs, is essential for bacilli growth and aims to identify and eliminate it to conquer tuberculosis.

Women Will Get Water Cure Too On Western Trail

A playful Western themed event unfolds as Amarillo plans a cattle car trip to Dalhart for the XIT Reunion with an all female twist. Women will be graded by attire and water dousing at the Silver Grill front, while 500 Amarilloans ride the Fort Worth and Denver tracks to depart for the Dalhart gathering. Cattle cars will carry passengers at one dollar per hundredweight with Mavericks providing drinks.

Wheeler County lake project survey underway in farm survey data

Engineers from the Bureau of Agricultural Economics conducted preliminary surveys in Wheeler County as part of the Wheeler County lake project. Ted Smith said the BAEE is supplementing information from the county commissioners WPA application and expediting construction on three dams funded in Swisher, Ochiltree and Hartley counties.
