A Texas river tale recounts the Canada n as a deadly force along the Panhandle. Logger notes five known drownings including a missing cowboy from two months ago and multiple pioneer deaths near Old Tascosa as floodwaters swallow travelers.
Paving of Amarillo's two main westbound highways, No. 60 to Clovis and No. 66 to Tucumcari, is being pushed toward the New Mexico line as work progresses.
A 35 mile Vega to Adrian section nears completion and the caprock finish is slated by Sept 15 with only a 17 mile gap to Glen Rio at the New Mexico line. The 22 miles through Deaf Smith County near completion plus paving west to Castro and Palmer counties advances two transcontinental federal routes in Texas.
Dalhart gears up for the XIT Reunion starting Monday at 10 AM with a giant parade led by J. D. Hamlin. The two day event on August 9 and 10 features a 200 member outdoor pageant, Buffalo Springs excursion, chuck wagon dinner, street dances, rodeos and old relics, expecting about 15 000 visitors with Amarillo contingents arriving Tuesday.
Lupe Velez, wife of Johnny Weissmuller, acted as a waitress at the Brown Derby in Hollywood when staff walked out. She and Bruce Cabot reportedly ordered a quick meal as 30 workers left. Velez balanced plates and served two portions before returning to the table.
Partly cloudy Sunday afternoon for Amarillo and vicinity. West Texas area west of the 100th meridian stays fair on Sunday. New Mexico region expects unsettled Sunday with little temperature change. Yesterday’s hourly figures show highs near 88 and lows around 76 in Amarillo with varied readings across stations.
HOT SPRINGS NEW MEXICO August 7 A 24 year old paralysis victim Charles Hunt laughed at death while attendants operated a 1000 pound respirator in an unfinished hospital. He demanded removal from the iron lung as his life depended on it. Hunt, an Los Angeles automobile worker, was rushed yesterday from El Paso Texas. He shows improvement today requesting water and milk while on a liquid diet. He is the only patient in the new hospital for crippled children which opens next month by governor Clyde Tingley executive order. Attendants include a small town doctor the Las Cruces district health officer Hunt s wife and sister and the prospective nurse superintendent.
Mrs. Frank Kunka of Follett Texas is hospitalized in Monte Vista Colorado with serious burns after a kerosene container exploded in her hands while starting a fire in a cabin store at Platoro. Her husband suffered hand burns while trying to extinguish the flames.
The House Agriculture Committee backs a Roosevelt draft to insure wheat growers against losses from drought floods freezes and pests. A $100 million corporation would be capped with a $20 million govt subscription first year and contracts span one year. Insurance would cover up to 75 percent of normal yield with premiums from under 1 percent to 35 percent.
In Shanghai Aug 7 Japanese and Chinese diplomats voiced hope war might be averted as middle Yangtze concessions at Hankow are evacuated. Tokyo ordered Japanese outposts to depart Hankow with 400 mariners aboard ships by Sunday noon while administration shifts to Chinese officials. Shigeru Kawagoe warned circumstances point to a grave crisis despite diplomatic efforts.
Frances Mary Boccassini, born via post mortem Caesarean in Philadelphia, died at Philadelphia General Hospital after a daring operation saved her life briefly. The infant had been kept alive using a makeshift oxygen tent and was improving before death.
Britain protests to the Franco regime over yesterday's air attack on the tanker British Corporal off the Algerian coast. Italian, French, and other merchant ships faced planes. the Indonesian- not involved. The Italian captain died and a Dutch observer was injured.
Justice Josiah Alexander Van Orsdel, longtime federal appeals judge in Washington, D. C., former Wyoming Supreme Court associate justice, and former U.S. assistant attorney general, died at 76 in Great Barrington. Roosevelt appointed him to the DC Circuit in 1907. His 1932 opinion addressed moral character for prohibition violators.
Ed W. Howe a noted Kansas journalist and author, aged 84, has suffered a slight stroke of paralysis. Physicians say his condition is fairly serious but he is often able to be about his home in Atchison. The illness comes after weeks of medical care.
Hollywood today reported serious injuries to Dick Purcell and Veda Ann Borg after a head-on collision in downtown. Borg suffered facial gashes possibly leaving scars while H A Russell 58 was driving the other car.
The Senate approved a bill sponsored by Senator Hugo Black to conduct a census of partially employed and unemployed people nationwide. The measure aims to gather detailed labor data and inform policy decisions.
Four baby boys were born today to Mrs Bernard Lingwood of Bradon Suffolk in Thetford Norfolk. Attendants reported mother and quads doing well. Mrs Lingwood is married to a local manufacturer.
A 30 foot boat burned to the water's edge early today near the Bayside Beach site where the City of Baltimore steamer burned last week. The pilot and two crewmen escaped unharmed.
Wreckage on a highway north of Amarillo left two Dalhart men dead Frank Ford Jr. 21 and Donnie Simpson 21 burned beyond recognition. An Amarillo driver Sterling Burris survived with severe wounds while two other drivers from Pampa were among the first to reach the scene. The crash occurred at 9 30 PM as the trucks collided near Four Way station. Bread cargo from the Dalhart truck was strewn along the road. Authorities planned an inquest in Amarillo.
The Senate approved a bill reorganizing lower court procedures as a substitute for Roosevelt’s court expansion plan. The measure, passed without a roll call, returns to the House for concurrence after minor amendments. It requires direct Supreme Court appeal in constitutional cases, mandatory attorney general intervention, and three-judge panels in lower court reviews.
Cord Corporation changes hands as E. L. Cord sells 500 000 shares to Emanuel Co and Schroeder Rockefeller & Co of New York for 2 million dollars. L B Manning purchases 158 000 shares for 632 600 dollars and may become Cord reorganized president. SEC charges stock manipulation tied to Morris Marking and Checker Cab case.
