Youth Tied With Pipe Bomb Shocks Festus Crowd

In Festus Missouri an 18 year old high school graduate carried a pipe bound burden for 10 hours on a football field after four men secured it around his neck. Demolition experts later found no explosives just wood and a screw. The incident involved his former teacher and drew police and spectators.

Texans Vote Tuesday Nine Constitutional Changes on Ballot

Texans go to the polls Tuesday to decide nine proposed constitutional changes from water policy to legislator salaries and student loans. Potter County polls run 7 am to 7 pm, Randall County 7 am to 7 pm in Amarillo and 8 am to 7 pm in Canyon and rural areas. Voters should bring registration certificates and vote locations include Amarillo police, public school admin, Am arillo High, College, Wolflin, Austin Jr High, St Marys Parish Hall, Bivins School, and Tascosa High School.

Two Injured In Two Car City Crash

Five of six people in a two car collision at East Amarillo Boulevard and Lakeside were treated at Northwest Texas Hospital. Driver Lee Robert Lockwood 34 and his wife Diane 20 were pinned for minutes with serious injuries including a head laceration possible skull fracture and possible hip fracture. Others Linda McCormick 18 Kenneth Holt 27 John Hirschlein 38 and Beulah Hirschlein 34 were also treated with injuries of varying certainty. The crash occurred near East Amarillo Boulevard and Lakeside.

Durbin Jury Still 3 Short in Deadly Dallas Case

In Austin Texas jury selection stalled with three jurors remaining to be chosen for the murder trial of Clyde Durin Jr 22 of Dallas. Judge Tom Blackwell planned to resume at 9 a m Monday with testimony to begin. The trial recessed at noon on Saturday pending completion of juror panels.

Balloon Hits House in Roswell High Altitude Flight

A 2,700-pound Air Force research balloon instrument package ricocheted off a Roswell roof Saturday, missing a sleeping woman by 10 feet and her husband by 20 feet at breakfast. It skimmed the roof, tore a 10 by 12 foot hole, and crashed into a neighbor’s garage. The craft was launched from the city’s old municipal airport. no injuries were reported.

In Bucharest the welcome for President Nixon was dampened by the Soviet bloc. Tass, the official Soviet news agency, set a cool tone across press and radio in Europe’s Communist world. Forty five minutes after Nixon arrived in Bucharest, Tass reported his arrival.

Nixon Draws Huge Romanian Welcome Amid Romanians Unity

United States President Richard Nixon received the warmest welcome of his world tour in Communist Romania. Government leaders mobilized a large turnout by allowing workers to cut their Saturday half day and fill streets into a throng estimated at 500,000. Crowds forced repeated stops for the motorcade as Nixon and Ceausescu emerged smiling, with Romanians chanting Nixon's name and bouquets tossed toward the limousines.

Sharks Bite Two Youths in Florida Surf

Two Florida teenagers were reported in satisfactory condition after shark attacks. John Wilson, 15, of Jacksonville, was severely bitten on a leg while surfing about 40 feet from New Beach shoreline, but reached shallow water. Robert Wamser, 13, was bitten Friday in the Gulf of Mexico, suffering lacerations to a leg and arm and underwent an operation.
