Regional spelling bee crowns two finalists in Amarillo
Representatives from 44 counties of Texas Oklahoma New Mexico and Kansas competed at Stephen F. Austin Junior High School Auditorium in Amarillo for a regional spelling bee. Eddie Pierce Beckham County Oklahoma fell first on fort. Julie Wallin Union County New Mexico faced pressure as rounds continued with missteps and careful enunciation. By round 33 Miss Jordan quit leaving Miss Reid and Miss Wallin in the final. Miss Reid won a year’s Britannica and a Washington trip.

Investigators recovered the flight recorder intact after an Electra crash in a hilly Oklahoma hillside killing 81 of 98 aboard. The four engine plane carried 92 GIs and 6 crew from Ft. Ord to Ft. Benning, with survivors treated at nearby hospitals. Officials noted no sabotage and opened an emergency center as CAB and FBI teams investigated the disaster, one of the worst military air crashes in U.S. history.

Texas Crash Kills 2 in Fort Worth flight incident
A twin engine Lear jet owned by Rexall Drug and Chemical Co. of Fort Worth crashed near Clarendon while en route from Amarillo to Fort Worth. Pilot Majewski, 28, was killed along with an FAA official aboard. Wreckage found in a muddy field south of Clarendon after radar loss at 41 000 feet.

Soviets Schedule New Pacific Space Rocket Tests
The Soviet Union announced tests will start Monday in two small Pacific target areas west of Midway Island and northeast of Wake Island. The three month program runs April 25 to July 31 with carrier rockets launched into 40 nautical mile circumference zones.
