Sanford citizens vote to resist disincorporation and hire James Lovell of Dumas to advise. Hutchinson County Judge Norman Coffee sets a special election for April 26 based on a petition signed by 42 residents, many of whom no longer live in Sanford. Local officials cite tax loss and loss of zoning powers as motives to keep the town intact. Lovell will meet with the council to decide on pursuing the petition’s legality and election actions.
TOKYO Communist China rejected the U.S. invitation for Chinese scientists and scholars to visit American universities calling the offer a fraud. A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Washington aims to deceive the American people and use friendly sentiment to push hostility toward China.

A Potter County Court of Domestic Relations jury found 15 year old Michael James Rood not delinquent after two hours and twenty minutes of deliberation in the case over the March 15 killing of Amarillo salesman James W. Keeter in a parking lot behind a 404 West 10th Street business. Keeter was bludgeoned to death with a tire tool. Rood admitted striking but claimed self defense. The prosecution contended the victim was repeatedly struck and not fighting back.
Marines repelled a Viet Cong assault 375 miles north of Saigon after a brutal mortar barrage. Air forces reported a new air-war gain with 42 trucks destroyed at Mu Gia Pass as 3,500 Korean troops joined South Vietnam operations, bringing total ROK forces to 25,000 and completing the Tiger Division deployment.
In Trent on Georgia a cave explosion released deadly gas killing two rescuers and trapping three Boy Scouts and their leader on a 20 foot ledge 300 feet inside Howard's Cave. Rescuers later reached them after six hours with oxygen tanks.
Six people died in a two car head on collision one mile west of Liberal Kansas on U S 54 Saturday night. Five others were hospitalized two in critical condition and the victims include Mrs Alena Maye Horton 25 Belle Price 47 Helen Anderson 26 Tammy Anderson 5 and Georgerita An.
In Howards Cave near Trenton Georgia rescuers pulled three Boy Scouts from the gas filled cave after they had been trapped for 12 hours with their leader who did not survive.
