In a stormy opener at Polo Grounds Giants edge Yankees 6 to 1, Carl Hubbell securing his seventeenth straight win. Rain drizzles as Deluge-like weather hampers play while the Giants seize control in the late innings.
In the third inning Selkirk homered to the upper right field stands as rain fell hard. Ruffing was hit, Hubbell struggled with grip, and Gehrig grounded to finish a tense frame. Hallmark actions included DiMaggio and Rolfe contributing singles and a Bartell misplay. No runs in the bottom of the inning despite bases loaded chatter.
Dickey was called out on strikes as Powell doubled down the left field line. Mancuso and Terry argued with Hubbell at the mound. Lazzeri walked, Selkirk went to steal third but was out, Lazzeri advanced to second on the play. Hubbell’s pitch produced ball three. Selkirk struck out. No runs, one hit, one left. In the fourth, Mancuso popped to Rolfe, Whitehead struck out, Jackson grounded out Crosetti to Gehrig. No runs, no hits, no errors.
In the fifth inning, Bartell hit a game tying homer for the Giants to left and receive a standing ovation. Hubbell worked carefully for the Yankees as Crossetti and Moore fouled off pitches, and Lazzeri turned a double play on a groundout. With five innings complete, the game is official: one run, one hit, no errors.
In a weather affected game the sixth inning sees Ott double and Mancuso drive in the only Yankee run while Gehrig and DiMaggio fail to convert. The Giants post a run on Mancuso’s liner scoring Ott, and the seventh sees Powell collect his third straight hit as Ruffing and the Yankees hold the line with no further scoring.
Crosetti doubled inside the third base line and slid over the bag in the mud, reaching safely as Bartell failed to tag. Rolfe bunted, the ball caromed past Hubbell, Crosetti advanced to third and Rolfe reached first amid the chaotic play.
Two hundred spectators watched as the World Series began at 12 30 with the Globe News play by play board drawing attention for the first game. Early arrivals claimed the bench while others stood or sat on car surfaces. The board will be used again tomorrow at the same time and place for game two.
In the inning a walk to Whitehead forced in a run, Jackson scored Ott on a fly to center, Mancuso and Whitehead advanced, Hubbell mishandled a ball allowing Mancuso to score, Selkirk threw wildly to the plate, and Hubbell reached third amid the chaos. Moore then grounded out to end the sequence.
The Third Court of Civil Appeals in Austin affirmed a trial ruling for Fast Texas Refining Co seeking to move 55,000 barrels of oil from Louisiana to Longview. It held a federal court judgment tied to Louisiana conservation laws is not admissible as a defense by the Texas Railroad Commission against tenders. The commission had blocked tenders. injunctions were issued to compel movement and restrain the commission. The appeal affirmed the trial court as the federal action was pending.
Earl Browder and two New York associates were arrested in Terre Haute as they stepped from a Chicago train. Police chief James C. Yates said Browder was held to prevent a speech. Waldo Frank and Seymour Waldman were also detained on vagrancy pending investigation. Browder had sent telegrams to Roosevelt and others prior to the incident.
Amarillo city approves 1936 tax rate of $1.12 per $100, 14 cents below the budget shown at a recent public hearing. A $571,060 refunding bond sale at par and accrued interest reduced interest and sinking fund needs. The commission considers a delinquent tax collection drive after revising the budget.
Am arillo Community Chest campaign dates have moved to October 16 23 per campaign chairman John Maynard. The goal remains 69700 dollars and only one campaign will be held.
In Havana a bomb plot was foiled when 20 sticks of dynamite wired to a telephone were found in a vacant apartment. Police had been lured to the hideout after an anonymous tip about radicals following the September 20 El Pais bombing. The device would have exploded when the telephone receiver was lifted.
Austin September 30. The Texas House of Representatives ordered an old age assistance investigation to begin this afternoon, with the House sitting as a committee of the whole. Director Orville Carpenter was expected as the first witness. The Senate adopted a resolution to include music readers in free textbooks for school children and adjourned until Thursday. Gov Allred planned to send interim appointments for confirmation but early adjournment prevented action. Appointees to be confirmed or rejected include old age assistance commissioners who appoint the director.
Texas legislators introduced bills including a $1 per ton salt tax by Wallace Broyles, diverting auto fees to old age assistance by J F Windsey, and an omnibus tax bill by RB FF Quinn. They seek to raise pari mutuel wagering taxes with Russell, Worley, and others and to add two cents per barrel to the oil tax, totaling four cents, by Arthur Riddle.

Fogs hung over southwestern Oregon as cooler weather was hoped to quell wildfires that burned Bandon and threatened nearby towns. The death toll rose to 11 with the discovery of an unidentified woman and child in the Bandon ruins.
In San Antonio on Sept 30 a baby boy was born to Mrs J L Blanton in a taxicab racing to a local hospital. The cab ride ended when the stork delivered the infant en route, marking a remarkable birth scene on the way to care.
TWA officials led by J. M. Coburn outline Amarillo airport plans matching standard city airfields. They propose three caliche runways at 150 feet wide and 5,000 feet long, a fourth blind landing strip 300 feet wide, plus an administration building, passenger station, and a 160 by 125 foot hangar. First improvements may omit some runways. the package reflects a complete field goal.
The Brazos River flood crested near Hearne Texas with the stream rising four inches per hour to 40.9 feet. Lowland lands along the riverfront and Bryan experienced widespread crop damage as the flood moved through Central Texas. The Trinity and Cedar rivers remained high nearby while Presidio on the Rio Grande saw the river receding. Farmers assessed crop losses and moved livestock from flood zones.
Arthur Brisbane notes in The Globe that reservations are pouring in for a Portales trip aboard a special Am arillo train to Portales New Mexico for the Roosevelt County Fair. The American Business Club and chambers of commerce sponsor the event with a $2 75 round trip fare including hatbands and canes.
Spanish rebels pressed advances on all fronts as Madrid faced a possible rout. Gen. Francisco Franco was reappointed commander in chief for the final drive toward Madrid with Mola leading the north and Franco to lead the south. Rebel sources said they would enter Madrid on October 12, “The Day of the Race,” amid rising expectations.
Forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for fair and warmer tonight and Thursday. West Texas should see slightly warmer conditions north and east central, with cooler Panhandle readings. New Mexico also fair tonight and Thursday with frost in the northwest portion tonight. Temperatures in Amarillo reached 43 at 1 pm and 67 degrees later.
