Rain and Carnival Train Crash Fail To Delay Opening of Fair. By Bill Wilson, Amusements Editor. The Amarillo Globe reports a new wave of terror in Czechoslovakia amid a fair opening event marked by rain and a carnival train crash that did not delay festivities.
Billy Cornett, Groom farm youth, won the gold loving cup in the livestock division at the 1941 Tri-State Fair, for showing the best pig from six counties in a Sears Roebuck sponsored contest judged by E. M. Regenbrecht. Weather and strong entries marked a lively start as Hereford, dairy cattle, and poultry contests drew teams from three states with judging set to continue. Amarillo theaters announce price changes and a new theater with RCA sound, while a name contest seeks a moniker for the forthcoming house as officials prep for a busy week of events and a public opening by Congressman Gene Worley.
Texas politics moved as Sen. H N Winfield took over the governor’s duties from Fort Stockton to serve during Gov Coke Stevenson’s Washington trip. Winfield, acting as president pro tempore, will steer state affairs until Stevenson’s return while Amarillo reports iced trees amid a 39 degree cold snap.

A train bearing 300 British wounded crossed Switzerland from Germany four times daily en route to a French port. They will be put aboard a British hospital ship for home. The vessel is bringing wounded German captives to a French port for exchange of seriously wounded prisoners, with Switzerland acting as transport intermediary.
Portland man splattered Mrs. Grant Harris porch posters with tomatoes during the 1940 campaign. The tomato seeds from the missiles sprouted last spring, yielding a bountiful harvest for Harris.
Weather forecast notes continuous rain this afternoon and tonight for Amarillo. Mr Winburn expects another round of rain followed by cloudy skies tomorrow with a slight rise in temperatures.
A 55-year-old widower Elia Taddi shot himself after seeing his three daughters Rose 24 Adeline 22 and Dolores 20 smoking in a store. He was found at home with a bullet wound and a nearby pistol. Det. Daniel O Mahoney reported the daughters stated the distress over their smoking prompted his suicide.
The forecast notes continued cloudiness and rain across Amarillo and West Texas through tonight and Tuesday with little temp change tonight and a slight warm up Tuesday. Intermittent rain and decreasing cloudiness are expected in New Mexico and Rio Grande Valley regions with warmer temperatures Tuesday. Temperature extremes over the past 24 hours ranged from 40 to 47 degrees with 2.15 inches of rainfall at the airport.
