In 1944 a German general sought surrender to the Eighth Infantry Division before Brigadier General Charles Canham. The unit, then patrolling the U.S. east coast, sailed for Europe in 1943 and entered combat in Normandy on July 4. It captured 316 000 prisoners, with 250 000 during the Elbe advance with Russian forces, and fought from Ay River to Brest, Luxembourg, Huertgen, Roer, Ruhr, Erft, Cologne, and Elbe, reaching V-E Day deep in Germany.
