Arrests Near Amarillo Trigger Childress Liquor Raids

Raids on a warehouse sized liquor store in Childress led to searches of private clubs and confiscation of liquor in wholesale lots. Erbert Bailey, about 50, charged with possession of beer for sale and whiskey for sale, bonded $1,500 on each count. Two men transported liquor to Bailey’s in Childress were charged and pleaded guilty, with further large hauls uncovered. Bailey has a long liquor law record, plus a past burglary conviction and paroled after a gunshot injury. Three private clubs were raided, and offices noted extensive confiscations including refrigerators and business records.

Four-State Hot Car Ring Bared at Trial

Edward Shoffner Jr and six others pleaded guilty to stealing cars and transporting them across state lines. The ring, active July 1950 to February 1951, involved 19 implicated men and 58 automobiles, with titles wired by James Van Huss.
