Death penalty survivor inherits slain wife estate
Steve Mitchell, condemned for murdering his wife Mildred Jean in December 1949, died in the Huntsville electric chair after being declared sole heir to his spouse’s estate valued at 35 000 to 50 000 dollars. Probate Judge Clem McClelland ruled under Texas community property law that he could inherit, despite the murder, while the Bryants sought to block it. Mitchell had received a 30 year stay earlier but faced execution for the death sentence. He did not make a final statement, spending his final hours with a chaplain, and died at 12 08 a.m. The case followed civil actions by the Bryants to prevent the inheritance.
