Chinese military experts in Chungking argue Japan must remain in a defensive war through the coming winter. They cite exposed Far East lines, weakening air power, manpower strain, and Allied pressure in the Solomon and New Guinea regions as factors keeping Japan on the defensive.
The U S Navy announced the loss of the destroyer Jarvis and the auxiliary transport Little in the Solomons. About 272 men are presumed dead. Jarvis damaged by enemy air off Guadalcanal and may have sunk. Little saved about half its crew and troops. Both ships en route from Tulagi to repair bases. Navy notes other ships lost or damaged in the Solomon area and reports ongoing battles with Japanese losses. Jurisdictions and commanders named.
The war training program class in Fundamentals of Radio will begin with an organization meeting tomorrow night at 7 at Amarillo College. Exiled Czechoslovak government says Czech women have formed an all female unit serving with the Red Army. Most are girls who escaped deportation to German labor camps.
Secretary Claude R. Wickard warned the nation must act quickly to avoid a shift from abundance to scarcity in food. Speaking to the National Association of Food Chains in Chicago he urged conservation and intensified production processing and distribution of essential foods as war needs rise. He called food a basic war material and urged dealers to treat it with heightened responsibility.
City departments at city hall prepare for the machine age as crates of machine bookkeeping equipment arrive. The auditors and tax offices will use the new machines to handle records and assessments.
The courthouse lawn path is doctored with soil to help grass spread over the barren strip. Keep Off the Grass signs at both ends deter pedestrians who circle via the walks. Commissioners’ court members expressed satisfaction with the changes.
