The Bronx County grand jury is convened to hear charges that Bruno Hauptmann, 35, unemployed German carpenter, accepted $50,000 ransom from Col Charles A Lindbergh in the child kidnapping case. Justice McLaughlin swore the panel and explained secrecy and voting rules as Col Lindbergh and Col Henry Breckinridge are expected to testify.
Mrs. Jon J. Vey of Cleveland, once burned by acid during a quarrel, plans to remarry her former husband behind Ohio Penitentiary walls. Vey, convicted of maiming, awaits release as the couple hope for a "happy ending" to their troubled marriage amid prior separations and arrests.
Special to the Globe Stratford Oklahoma September 24 one gunman was killed and another seriously wounded in a running gunfight with officers near Stratford late last night. The robbers had earlier hit filling stations at Liberal Kane and Guymon Oklahoma. One wounded suspect identified as Zack Conzonzal 18 from Canada. The other a 22 year old with a jumping horse tattoo and Texas under it. Sheriff Arthur Ullom and night watchman Bert Green pursued in a rain slicked chase starting near Rabbit Creek. The suspects fled by car into Stratford and crashed after stalling in water as officers closed in.
In Fort Worth on September 24, church leaders led by Dr. W. R. White of United Forces against the liquor traffic prepared to push for a local option election in Tarrant County to curb 3.2 beer. White noted a General Ministers Alliance meeting would consider the proposal and suggested similar local votes may follow in Dallas and other counties.
Partly cloudy and cold tonight and Tuesday with light rain. West Texas shows partly cloudy skies south with rain and colder conditions in north and east areas. New Mexico remains generally fair to night and Tuesday with little temperature change. Temperature extremes reach up to 63 to 79 degrees at one o'clock.
Eight jurors were seated at noon for the murder trial of Amarillo barber John J. Ash charged with killing Frank Newton Lanning in July. Defense questions raised self defense and possible suspended sentence, with jurors asked about death penalty views. Lanning, a CWA laborer and ex-convict, was killed after a quarrel.
AMARILLO attorney George J. Huskey aged 34 of the firm Cox and Huskey died last night in San Angelo at a local sanitarium. He was a UT graduate and left active practice about a year ago due to failing health. He leaves parents, three brothers, six sisters, and a brother accompanying him to Gafney, S. C. for the funeral. He had practiced with George G. McCarthy in Amarillo with offices in the Fisk Building.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh refueled their plane in a Spearman pasture near William J Whitson after landing from California en route home. They did not announce destination, autographed Whitsons, and spoke with locals while awaiting gasoline. The visit drew a crowd before departure.
Col. and Mrs. Charles A. Lindbergh left Wells Fargo airport at 5:30 A M heading for New York to answer investigators in the kidnapping slaying of their son. They planned fuel stops at Albuquerque or Amarillo and had earlier flown from Saugus California arriving in Winslow Arizona at six o'clock last night.
Ruth Pontico, once billed as the world's fattest lady, has lost about 200 pounds in six weeks and now weighs about 400 pounds. Doctors prescribed a reducing diet, but she hopes to return to her starches after illness in Springfield Missouri.
Two men wounded in a Fort Worth gun battle were treated under police guard in Dallas. William Preston Garrett, 25, was shot three times in the legs and hips and went to a Dallas hospital. Clyde Cady, 23, was wounded in the foot and held in the city jail. They were wanted for questioning in a series of filling station bombings in Fort Worth.
Dr T H Biard 5 pioneer Otto physician died after a long illness in a hospital in Waco. He had practiced medicine for many years and was well known in the Otto community.
Washington September 41 Francis J. Gorman chairman of the textile strike committee charged employers discriminated against active union leaders in re employment of textile strikers. He said cases are mostly in the South and will be taken up immediately. Gorman urged unions to report discrimination and members to be patient as mills gradually resume operations after a period of non opening and limited employment.
Tokyo reports an agreement was reached for Manchukuo to buy Russia’s half interest in the Chinese Eastern Railway for 170,000,000 yen about 50,000,000 dollars. The foreign office confirmed terms had been reached after months of bargaining.
Fort Worth reports a Red Bluff Dam project costing 2,600,000 dollars under PWA plans. In Reeves and Loving Counties a 112 foot high dam will create an 11,500 acre lake and hold about 285,000 acre feet of water. The project aims to provide electric power flood control and irrigation for about 100,000 acres.
Washington dispatch reports President Roosevelt may reorganize the NRA this week forming a five member policy board headed by an executive officer with five administrative posts. Nominees include Bernard Baruch Raymond Moley Gerard Swope and Leon Henderson among others. The future of Gen Hugh Johnson remains unclear as he is on vacation and uncertain whether he will keep a role.
Amble through the Panhandle reports more rain and colder weather. Weatherman H T Coliman predicts cloudy skies and continued precipitation for Amarillo and the Panhandle over the next 24 hours. Rainfall varies with a inch at Childress Colorado and Lela, quarter to half inches along the Fort Worth and Denver line, and showers from Amarillo to Bovina with the heaviest quarter-inch between Hereford and Roovine.
Harold Vanderbilt steered Rainbow to her third straight victory as the defender led Endeavour off Newport. Rainbow crossed the line ahead of Tom Sopwith's blue-hulled challenger to claim another win in the series.

Other murder cases set for call included L D Compton for Charlies Payton slaying and Jim Mullins linked to Charles Hovey death.
