Norman Thomas and Earl Browder, Socialist and Communist candidates, condemned Hearst newspapers and the reactionary camp, arguing democracy fights fascism. Browder framed the yearly issue as democracy versus fascism, while Thomas urged socialism’s victory as true democracy, with Roosevelt and Landon broadcasting to the Herald-Tribune forum.

Greenville Texas September 23 strikes by Big Four Brotherhoods workers who walked out last Saturday plan a city wide meeting on the Public Square to demand wage hours rules and working condition revisions. The Louisiana Arkansas and Texas Railway aims to run a single mixed train daily between Greenville and Shreveport but is behind schedule.

Reports say Amarillo Diocesan Council of Catholic Women banquet will attract the largest crowd yet with delegations from Dalhart San Angelo Lubbock Midland Sweetwater Pampa Littlefield Big Spring and Hereford among others. Out of town attendees include Denver Oklahoma and Tulsa officials and El Paso council leaders. The event happens tomorrow evening at Amarillo Country Club.
Cleveland hosts the American Legion eighteenth annual national convention with 70,000 in the march and dozens of committee reports on national defense foreign relations and Americanism. General Frank T. Hines and William Green address the tired legionnaires as delegates prepare for final business and officer selection.
In Washington on September 23 a small remnant of the Grand Army of the Republic paraded from the Post Office Building to the White House. Commander in chief Oleg Nelson led the march as the once great army appeared unable to march in Washington again. About 500 veterans participated in the short procession.
Ministers and elders from Plains Pres byterian churches gathered for the semi annual conference of the Presbytery of Amarillo. Rev Fred 8 Rogers of Plainview was elected moderator succeeding Dr R Thomsen of Amarillo. Rev J Hoyt Boles of Tulsa remains clerk. Dr Thomsen delivered the conference sermon on Personalized Religion. Seventeen ministers attended with many laymen. Dr Paul J Schwab of Trinity University Waxahachie was on the afternoon program and Guy W Green a Kansas City evangelist gave the devotional at the start of the afternoon session.
Panhandle pioneers by the thousands attended the Tri-State Pair grounds for the Panhandle Oil Settlers Association fifteenth annual meeting. W. H. Fuqua presided retiring as president. J. C. Estlack praised pioneer press. McCraw sought settlement on federal tax plans affecting Texas oil laws in Washington.
In San Diego on September 23 a hospital superintendent called Donald J. Hazell’s confession of killing Ruth Muir a delusion, noting Hazell is insane. Police and officials investigated the August 30 La Jolla Beach slaying while Hazell, recently paroled from Patton State Hospital, remains under review with no charges filed.
Babe Stapp drives the two ton Mormon Meteor after Ab Jenkins. A lock rim pin came out and a tire blew at 150 miles an hour. Stapp kept control, returned to the pit for repairs, and continued pursuit of world speed records.

O D Stevens, imprisoned for mail robbery, was acquitted of murder charges in the 1941 Rutherford case after 23 hours of deliberation. The jury’s seventh ballot verdict spared Stevens from the electric chair, though he faces return to Alcatraz for his prior conviction. The District Attorney signaled no further trials on Rutherford and Sturdivant slayings to avoid jeopardy.
In Carthage Texas on September 23, witnesses testified that Mrs Reable Childs could not have fired the shot that killed Marlie Childs unless she stood on an object, challenging defense claim. Deputies Grover Poplin and Lucky Pleasant said the bathroom window shot angle indicated a tall shooter, undermining Ter rence Bramlett's assertion of innocence.
James W. Osborne, formerly of Hobbs New Mexico, is charged by the Department of Justice with robbing the First National Bank of Sudan Texas on August 27. Federal officials said the case was filed for Texas authorities and details of the robbery are not known. Osborne claims political frame up as Hobbs Sheriff expects to extradite his former stenographer Wanda Wingo on a mortgage auto sale charge. Osborne to be returned to Texas for trial.
The League of Nations credentials committee recommended Ethiopian delegates may stay in the assembly, reversing a plan to submit Ethiopia’s sovereignty to the World Court. Haile Selassie and envoys argue an independent Ethiopian government remains, despite Italian annexation, while Italy refuses to participate until Ethiopia is erased from membership.
