Polk Street business halted as Amarillo attracts an estimated 150 000 people and fair visitors for the Tri-State Fair Parade the first since 1941. Captain Carlie Price of the police traffic squad says it was the largest crowd the department has ever handled.
Thousands line Polk Street as final touches go on exhibits and livestock displays before the 1947 Tri State Fair opens at the fair grounds. J R Hogge of St Francis helps judge vegetables while Future Farmers of America displays are set. Parade steams past with Shamrock High Band and multiple school groups.
Cool but sunny conditions welcome Tri-State Fair crowds with the Weather Bureau predicting continued mild weather. Highs of 80 this afternoon and 84 tomorrow, with temperatures rising gradually and a Dallas origin forecast noting a trend toward the Panhandle.
W. R. Pumphrey president of the Amarillo Paper Company at 700 Grant remains in critical condition at St. Anthony's hospital. He suffered a heart attack on Sunday September 14.
Britain hails the US plan for international control of atomic energy and directly challenges Soviet leader Andrei Vishinsky to offer a similar gesture for any exclusive weapon. UN delegate Hector McNeil denounces Soviet warmongering as ludicrous and monstrous and warns the November London Four talk may be the last hope for peace.
Investigators found two hands of low ball poker at the table after the early morning shooting of Glenn William Wilson over a card game. Alex F. Phillips faces charges and reportedly had the hands checked by police. The two hands, seventy six on Phillips’ side and eighty six on Wilson’s, suggest motive but details remain undisclosed.
Wheat and livestock prices moved mixed in Chicago and other markets as analysts watch for a possible turning point in living costs. In Paris a 16 nation conference pledged a four year Marshall plan worth 19.33 billion dollars to aid economic stabilisation and boost grain output. A Washington cabinet food committee prepared recommendations for President Truman while Helen Cohen urged action against market manipulators in New York.
Larry, an unidentified blond blue eyed 18 month old, was left at a commercial boarding home. Miss Jane Dickson of Potter County Child Welfare says his sister abandoned him and forgot to leave his name or address. After Amarillo Sunday News Globe coverage, relatives provided a name, address and connections. D. L. McDonald, Panhandle water engineer, returned from Dallas after an operation and is home at 2122 Polk awaiting recovery.
The International Jamboree of Boy Scouts was held at Moisson France from August 9. A leader and scouts from the group attended as messengers of peace and good will among nations. Williams Boyce Agency offers comprehensive personal liability insurance for families.
Mrs. R. V. Giersch wins first prize of five dollars for reporting three ROTC boys returning a set of white sidewall plates to the owner. Harrison Hagerton earns three dollars for a tip about a lost six year old girl. J. M. Martin wins two dollars for a gila monster story. Others contributing tips include Mrs. Julia Brooks, Mrs. H. Painter, Mrs. E. P. Hubbard, and Mrs. T. E. Keasler.
Polls open at 8 in the morning and close at 5 in the evening for a special charter amendment election. Any Amarillo resident in Potter or Randall County who has paid poll tax and is of voting age may vote. Veterans discharged since Jan 31 of this year may vote without a tax receipt if meeting other requirements. Eight amendments require separate yes or no votes and two principal issues are included.
The Globe argues for Amendment 4 to raise the tax rate and fund city services while warning against minority control. It notes Amarillo's low current rate and cites officials and citizens supporting revisions to pave, police, fire, health, and budgeting needs.
A Borger man J F Waters was burned when Standish Pipe Line booster station south of Canyon exploded after 10 am and 8 inch pipe ruptured. He was taken to Neblitt Hospital and is expected to be released tomorrow. Witnesses describe flames, heat and a loud explosion as the scene unfolded eight miles southeast of Canyon near Highway 87. Also a Amarillo man Carl Applequist 21 accused Patrolman Claude B Evans of beating him in a police car twice between midnight and 1 am. Evans admits striking him but denies provocation. County Attorney Roy Snodgrass referred the case to the grand jury and city officials began interviews.
E. T. Dusty Miller of Amarillo is recovering at St. Anthony’s Hospital after a severe heart attack on August 31. Office associates say his recovery may be long and slow and that his condition remains critical, limiting visitors.
