Scudder announced a closed meeting for city state and county workers with hopes of recruiting more Texas city employees. He noted Amarillo talks with workers, 100000 members nationwide and 2500 in Texas. He aims to improve municipal service and create a career city workforce while policing civil service. Governor Shivers rejected Secretary of State Shepperd’s push for ironclad party loyalty rules. He said he might sign a pledge but courts deem it binding only at the moment of taking it. He noted Snyder’s Sept. 27 meeting as social and said he supports the party’s wishes, not personal candidacy.
Reno reports a furore as Washoe County ministers accuse judges of delaying regular court work by performing many marriages. They allege judges and aides pocket gratuities totaling about 125000 annually. District judges defend neutrality, saying marriages are done in free time and outside court business.
Six resignations shrink an already small police department led by Chief Sid Harper leaving 93 officers of a 112 authorized force. The next year budget allows 123, with four applicants over 35. Oct 1 Civil Service rules let hiring new older officers. Resignees include Ralph C. Bryan, Kenneth L. Goodman, Norris B. Austin, Lige Embry, Darwin L. Ballew, Reuben B. Lafferty, detailing effective dates and career spans.
Roy Bourland of Pampa, vice president of the West Texas chamber of commerce, organized the removal of the old hotel girders at Seventh and Taylor. He arranged a risky operation to roll 35 foot high steel beams weighing up to 30,200 pounds onto trucks, ending a 23 year landmark and aiding Amarillo’s convention bid. The girders’ removal closed a chapter on the Davidson Hotel era and showcased Bourland’s persistence in securing local projects.
Potter County officials face uncertainty as to who will conduct the Sept. 29 High Plains Underground Water District No. 1 election. County Clerk Loren Jones, County Judge Gene Jordan, and others report not receiving official notice or guidance. Ballot boxes will be at Alice Landergin School in Randall County and Sam Houston School in Potter County. Amarillo residents within city limits are ineligible. See WATER VOTE-Page 5.
Old Red the New Hampshire Red rooster becomes increasingly aggressive, targeting the Manning family and their dog. After repeated incidents in the yard, Mr. and Mrs. Manning decide the bird will be eaten, rejecting earlier Thanksgiving hopes.
Two bareheaded youths about 17 years old robbed Mr and Mrs Ley Stockton of a few dollars after approaching their parked car on Tascosa Road northwest of Amarillo. The tall assailant wore a mask while the other flashed a pistol as they forced the couple into the rear seat and searched pockets and the car. They escaped with Stockton leaving the wallet empty and taking the car keys. The incident began around 2 am near the scene and ended after driving away with the vehicle for several minutes and making U turns before leaving on a nearby road.

Pyongyang radio said UN forces attacked heavily on central and eastern fronts with a bitter fight. US Third and 25th Divisions were named on the central front. A large artillery and air force backing supported the drive. Seven T-34s were destroyed and two damaged by UN jets as three Allied divisions and tanks began Operation Cleaver at dawn on the central front.

Saturday looks fair and slightly warmer with a high near 68 today and 75 tomorrow. A 24 hour period ended at 6 30 this morning recorded a high of 96 and a low of 53.
