Shanghai dispatch reports 40 Japanese navy planes bombed Nanking for two and a half hours, killing scores as Japan targets the Chinese capital. Admiral Yarnell warned Tokyo to avoid bombing near U S ships.
The note urged Japanese forces to avoid bombing the gunboats Luzon and Guam while Ameri cans remain in Nanking and asked for precautions by air and land units. The Japanese high command announced a merciless bombardment starting tomorrow as embassies weigh safety moves. The U S embassy staff moved to the gunboat Luzon with Ambassador Nelson Johnson in the last car, and the Luzon will stay mid stream overnight. Foreign embassies vary in status as Chinese residents are told to evacuate. Two raids on Nanking were reported this morning as experts foresee a 200 to 300 plane start to the assault. Cholera in Shanghai is officially an epidemic per public health officials.
Under typical Indian summer skies the Tri State Fair opened this morning with thousands at the exposition grounds. Shamrock leads opening day as a 60 piece band directed by Glen Truax arrives with 400 boosters. Mayor W H Walker Chamber of Commerce Secretary Bedford Harrison Editor Albert Cooper and School Superintendent W C Perkins are among delegates. The Shamrock band participates in the downtown parade and broadcasts from KGNC. Groom and White Deer also send bands and large contingents.
