C B Bowyer alias B Byers Browder Berry faces federal forgery and impersonation charges in San Antonio. Officials say he is wanted in more than a dozen southern cities. Delegates at the Southwest Water Works Convention held a noon farewell luncheon in the Crystal Ballroom of the Herring Hotel. The closing adjournment is planned for this afternoon as Pat Bracken presides. A Chamber of Commerce sponsored musical program followed the luncheon.
Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur launched the Boulder Canyon dam project by driving a Nevada silver spike and naming the dam after engineer Herbert Hoover. The ceremony marked the start of a 22 mile Union Pacific branch line to the site, though work on the dam itself will begin next year. Arizona plans to sue in the U S Supreme Court to stop the project.
A Pickwick bus was forced off the highway near Roswell New Mexico. Edward T. Holcomb of Chillicothe Ohio, 76, was killed. Twelve others injured, including Dennis Coffey and Mrs Rebecca Holcomb. Driver Paul Tremier of Amarillo reported none of the injured were in serious condition. The bus had left El Paso and was due in Amarillo when the accident occurred.
City officials will decide within two weeks whether to accept a reduced electricity rate schedule offered by Southwestern Public Service Company. The company, through GM CG Makeig, proposes a rate comparison and seeks a new franchise and contract with the city. Mayor Col. Ernest O. Thompson said the commission will review the information and reach a decision soon.
In New Orleans a testimonial dinner united Governor Huey P. Long with his fiercest political foes. Long touted a $68,000,000 bond issue to refinance New Orleans municipal finances and build highways and bridges. He predicted paving 3,000 miles of roads and 6,000 miles of farmers gravel roads plus 12 free bridges within ninety days to cut unemployment.
Chicago police hunting 26 public enemies arrested Matthew Capone brother of Al Capone during a raid on a South Side apartment. He was held at Grand Crossing Station as authorities probe rackets and gangster influence in labor unions. Detectives seized union records to expose how hoodlums obtained union jobs and muscle through unions.
Ruth Alexander, 24, a San Diego aviatrix, perished after taking off from Lindbergh Field on a projected one stop trans continental flight to Newark. Her low wing monoplane crashed into a hill four miles north of the field. An engine explosion was suspected. She had planned to stop at Wichita, Kansas. She was born in Irving, Kansas, in 1906 and came to California in 1928.
Amarillo chef Charles Renfro also known as Bob Branson will be transported by motor car to Asheville North Carolina where he is wanted for a murder committed four years ago. The suspect admitted the shooting claiming self defense and waived extradition. A sheriff’s message said officers will escort Renfro Thursday morning from police headquarters.
Police destroyed a Detroit illicit distillery in uptown business district, seizing equipment valued at about 1 million dollars. Operators escaped by rope ladders as officers battered doors. the plant featured a telephone system, elevators, and a ventilation setup.
In Crane Missouri on September 18 mourners gathered for the funeral of Mrs Archie Dunnegan. The open casket revealed perspiration on the forehead delaying the service for hours. A doctor arrived, found no embalming, and attempted restoratives before declaring her dead a second time and the procession resumed.
Mrs Karl Ross of Canyon collapse followed a 3 year old girl Lottie Kate Rons being struck by a motor car at Polk Street and Eighth Avenue. The child was not seriously hurt and remained at the hospital with her mother later. Mrs Ross suffered a nervous breakdown but her condition was not serious.
W H Henderson of Shreveport Louisiana plans to seek the 850 kilocycle wavelength for Station WDSU New Orleans to challenge the Hello World program of KWEG. He has a history before the commission of presenting 167000 affidavits from listeners in support of his show. The commission previously limited duplication of original affidavits and required the papers be accessible for court review.
