Fire swept a small three story hotel in St Louis killing two men and injuring five others, including three women. Twelve residents escaped as flames trapped occupants on the third floor and firemen rescued several from rooms cut off by the blaze. The dead were George Sassell, 50, and Andrew Sansouci, 65.
Coroner Vanderslice said motive for the drowning of Mrs. Jenny Graham Kane was found in letters signed BR H. 8. indicating a plan to get rid of her. The remark came during arguments against bond for Professor Elisha Kent Kane of the University of Tennessee, charged with his wife’s murder.
The federal grand jury returned 23 indictments before adjournment. Victor L. Blakely of Fort Worth faces embezzlement for $33 552.76 at Continental National Bank, with ten counts. Jeanette Harter, former teller at San Angelo National Bank, indicted on three counts for $5 369 in embezzled funds.
Huntington Long Island Sept 17 District Attorney Alexander G Blue of Suffolk County postponed the coroner s inquest into the death of Benjamin P Collings found in the Long Island Sound He cited developments and the possibility a lunatic may have killed Collings and said Mrs Lillian Collings would not be asked to testify.
Moyle and A Allen, California fliers, reported safe aboard a Russian ship in the Bering Sea after nine days missing since their Japan to Seattle takeoff. They asked for a publicity man and said they would fly again once weather allowed. The Buriat relayed that the monoplane was refueled and ready to depart Navarin Island for Seattle or return toward Tokyo.
A near Gladewater oil well with potential output of 35000 barrels caught fire after oil flowing in a creek ignited near the site. The well is owned by Artis Phillips and Dick Richardson. Oil men worked to extinguish the blaze as flames spread back to the well from the creek.
Charles Fooshee received a decade term in the state penitentiary for the murder of his wife Billie Fooshee after a December 14 quarrel outside a dance hall. The trial spanned the week in district court.
Advanced seat sale for the Leonard Stroud rodeo and the Indian spectacle will open at City Drug Store No 1 on Saturday September 19 at 9 A M. The event features Leonard Stroud Rodeo Dodson World Fair Shows and New Mexico Indian Inter Tribal ceremonies as dozens of cowboys and cowgirls head to Amarillo for daily rodeo contests. The Indian tribe arrives Monday to rehearse for evening performances while a 30 show carnival and 16 rides arrives Sunday aboard 40 railroad cars. Workmen prepare the grounds for a Monday 8 am opening and tickets go on sale Saturday at City Drug Store 517 Polk Street with reservations encouraged.
