A longtime Smeltzer Bank employee, active in First Presbyterian Church, is jailed in a $550000 embezzlement case. Neighbors recall him as a trusted elder and civic figure, with decades at the bank since 1917. The arrest shocks a close knit community amid stunned disbelief and memory of his service.
NEW KENSINGTON PA Sept 14 AP for the second time in a month a prominent banker faces embezzlement charges. William Paul Smeltzer 60 assistant cashier of First National Bank is accused by the FBI of stealing 550000 over 22 years. Earlier Ludwig Schick president of Parnassus National Bank was charged with 600000 embezzlement and released on 50000 bond. The case has dominated local talk as residents learn Smeltzer ledgers were in his control and he reportedly used funds to play the stock market. The bank remains open with no depositor withdrawals and its fidelity bond plus capital cover the shortage.
In Astoria Oregon Carl Bergland a painter working on a lumber mill smoke stack was overcome by fumes and fell from a 30 foot scaffold into a water tank. He sank for 15 minutes but survived after workmen pulled him out and artificial respiration revived him. he remained in hospital recovering.
Washington Sept. 14. The government authorized federal rent stabilizer Tighe E. Woods to impose rent control on residences in six critical defense housing areas including Brazoria County and Borger Texas. Base dates vary by area and rents will be rolled back toward prewar levels per congressional action.
At United Nations New York Sept 14 a source says Secretary General Trygve Lie and others are cool to opening a prayer and meditation room in the UN building. It is decided not to open a prayer room in the 38 story secretariat building and no final decision on a General Assembly space. Consensus reflects debate among delegates and secretariat about church and state space.
Sgt. Jimmy Martin of the regular Army National Guard found a full length fur coat folded between pine branches near the National Guard Armory housed in the old Plains Creamery building at 112 Taylor. Police theorize the coat was stolen from a car and placed there by a thief.
Traffic in downtown Amarillo moves faster after signals shortened cycles from 60 to 50 seconds. Harold Miller, the traffic engineer, notes a 50 50 split for east west and north south flows with green and red 22 seconds and amber 3 seconds. The change adds about two miles per hour and reduces rush hour delays at Fifteenth Sixteenth Avenues and Washington Street where cycles dropped from 60 to 38 seconds.
Good weather for tonight and tomorrow favors the football game between Amarillo and Childress. Mild Tri-State conditions yesterday continue with a today high near 80 and tonight low around 52. Tomorrow’s high near 84, while yesterday’s high reached 76 and the low was 49.

Benson, who beat Walker Cup hero Harold Paddock yesterday, struggled needing 80 strokes on the par 36 35 course. Maxwell, who played in the Texas PGA Tour event at Amarillo last June, finished third in medal play with 278, two behind Byron Nelson and one behind Chuck Klein as the low amateur.
