Moscow dispatch reports Hitler ordered the immediate capture of Stalingrad with a vast German force. Red Star and other outlets describe relentless fighting as Volga defenses hold, urging defenders to resist to the end and recalling Stalin era orders.
British sea-borne forces reportedly seized Akbanja Majunga and Morondava on Madagascar’s west coast under 18 warships. Dispatches say motorized columns drive toward Tananarive inland capital as Ambanja lies 120 miles southwest of Diego Suarez, the northern base recently captured.
Allied forces report heavy fighting in the Efolgi area as Japanese troops push toward Port Moresby. Casualties mount on both sides while Allied planes target supply lines and MacArthur notes continued patrol activity near Mubo. Prime Minister Curtain says stabilization plans are underway but details stay limited.

President Roosevelt said he hoped by Monday to implement nearly all Baruch committee recommendations on the rubber problem. The plan includes gasoline rationing or tire mileage limits, a universal 35 mile per hour speed limit, and a major reorganization of rubber administration with a new official under the War Production Board.
London reports a large RAF bomber force, near 1000 aircraft, hit Dusseldorf and western Germany targets last night. Thirty-one planes are listed as missing. fighters claimed one enemy plane down.
