Amarillo faces a projected obligation of 50 000 to 75 000 dollars to secure ground and help fund the Rock Island main line from Amarillo to Liberal Kansas. City officials and business leaders back the project, while some critics claim the plan is strained by the needed funds before construction begins.
The crop declined by 250000 bales in the fortnight ending September 1. The Agriculture Department forecast this year’s production at 13740000 500-pound bales from conditions on that date, with state figures for Virginia Louisiana Texas Oklahoma Arkansas New Mexico showing varied yields and conditions. Last year’s crop totaled 13627936 bales.
New Orleans Sept 8 prices for October cotton jumped 65 points and December 60 points after the government's crop indication of 13 740 000 bales, with the market 111 points higher for October and 105 for December from the early low. Bullish enthusiasm was steadied by heavy ginney stocks reaching 1 892 000 bales.
A bullish government crop report showing 56.2 percent crop condition and a 1925 yield of 13 740 000 bales lifted cotton prices about four dollars per bale. October contracts opened around 23.18 cents a pound and December at 28.45 cents with later gains near the day’s top. Hedge selling from the South followed the Census Bureau figures, the heaviest for this period.
In Poteau Oklahoma Thrasher manager of the Oklahoma Arkansas Telephone company was shot and killed by L E Carmichale his partner Miss Mayme Fries chief operator at the Poteau exchange was seriously wounded Six bullets struck Thrasher who was also chairman of the telephone division of the Oklahoma Utilities association The shooting followed a business argument and Miss Fries is expected to die
Piggly Wiggly No. 3 will open in a new brick building at the corner of Mississippi avenue and Fifth Street in San Jacinto on November 1. Building of 256 by 70 feet begins tomorrow. Leland Abbott and M. C. Hancock will develop the store, with W. N. Durham of Amarillo directing. Durham says a five year lease will be signed and the No. 3 manager will come from Nos. 1 or 2.
A Texas Company gas well near Nocona ignited after hitting gas sand at 860 feet. The W. W. Jones well, an offset to the Hinton well, reportedly blew in with an estimated flow of 75,000,000 cubic feet.
Colonel Ernest O Thompson announced the Amarillo hotel will formally open September 25 with a monster dinner and three simultaneous dances. A $2.50 per plate charge was noted. The hotel also installed a dining room cooling system and will reopen Thursday.
Mrs. C B Cook president Benton County W C T U was shot to death in her home last night by an unidentified assailant. Friends believe liquor law enforcement activity may have prompted the killing as she had aided arrests of violators. A bullet passed through a first floor window as she sewed and she died without regaining consciousness. An inquest is being held as the county W C T U convention was to open today with Mrs Cook presiding.
London reports a cold stormy spell that ends the English holiday season, described as unequalled at this season for 38 years. The weather disrupts usual travel and leisure activities as autumn approaches.
More than 1,000 school teachers and trustees attend a major teachers institute in Canyon, with sessions and sectional meetings through the week. R B Cousins of South Texas Teachers College Kingsville, G W Frazier of State Teachers College Greeley Colorado and Laura V Hamner Potter County superintendent addressed delegates.
The Board of City Development in Amarillo plans trial passenger flights to Fort Worth within two weeks with daily air service as a possibility. A local firm may finance the venture and negotiators seek pilots with passenger planes. A two person train fare costs 42.50, while air travel could be about 125 dollars, signaling a potential regional airline network.
In district court this morning Judge Judy Henry Bishop overruled the motion to quash the 100 member special venire in the Ida McCord murder case. Trial resumes Thursday at 9 am. Defense attorneys include H C Reeder Umphres and Mood. Lloyd Fletcher is district attorney.
In a National League tilt Brooklyn defeated Philadelphia 16 to 1 as Pierce and Wilson drive counts. Earlier New York routed Boston 8 to 4 with Shawkey and Hoyt trading outs and Luebbe and Fuhr contributing key hits.

Amarillo officials pass an ordinance banning Ringling Bros. from performing in Amarillo from September 10 to October 10 each year and prohibiting street parades during that period. The move aims to protect the Amarillo Tri-State fair and secure circus cooperation. Ringling Bros. contends they will perform on September 26 despite the ban.
Shanghai dispatch reports the U.S. Noa delivering the bodies of four crew members killed when a steam generator exploded at sea. The dead are Floyd Dixon Sapulpa Oklahoma W H Kinder Evansville Indiana R L Shepard Casa Grande Arizona and J L Pinkham Minden Nebraska.
