Washington dispatch notes sharpening political heat as predictions of tax cuts circulate. President Truman backs the Pearl Harbor investigation, which the Senate has approved and the House is set to vote on, amid Republican calls for equal committee membership. Congress adjourned until Monday.
Washington dispatch reports Senator George of Georgia called the 25 to 26 dollar weekly jobless benefit plan unworkable and signaled its likely defeat in the Senate finance committee. Missouri and other states warned that federal grants would reduce state aid, possibly eliminating benefits. The piece notes broader Congress activity on federal research and employment bills and Gurney’s potential Foreign Relations appointment.

The War Labor Board accused 40,004 workers in Detroit of flouting the presidents request for a no strike pledge. Ford says the Kelsey Hayes wheel plant stoppage adds to widespread layoffs totaling over 40,000, with 22,000 idle in Detroit plants and 3,000 at branch units. Additional 4,200 workers face layoff at Buffalo and other sites. Hudson Motor Car strike idled 6,000 CIO members as part of broader disputes affecting about 7,000 more workers.

Marvin R. Duffie testified in 47th District Court about the fatal stabbing of Homer J. Beck on May 19. He described Beck assailing him with a chain and Duffie grabbing a knife to defend himself as Beck hit him, leading to Beck’s death while walking a cow near North Houston Street.
