A 400 pound hog wandered through the St Albans section of Queens causing alarms and traffic jams at Linden and Parmers boulevards. A passerby called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the hog was captured for the owner.
Five bombing planes from Mallorca direction dropped bombs on the Spanish port of Alicante setting fire to the British steamer Marvia. Three civilians were killed and nine wounded. The casualty toll and fire were confirmed amid wartime reporting from Valencia.
Potter County commissioners court will sit as a tax equalization board for three days beginning tomorrow to review rendition increases. Property owners whose renditions were raised have been notified and invited to discuss the matter with the board.
The Altar Society of Sacred Heart Cathedral will meet at the Cathedral Mall Wednesday at 1 30 o’clock. Hostesses will be Mr G C Saunders, Mrs Pred Horslough and Mr J J Laughlin.
Mosquitoes blamed for spreading sleeping sickness among horses across Iowa Illinois Wisconsin Minnesota Michigan and Indiana with $1,000,000 in horse losses expected before cold weather. Dinsmore cites serums isolation mosquito nets and early treatment as keys while 75 percent of horses are naturally immune.
Speculation arises in Mexico City that a barter deal with Germany exists after three oil shipments to Hamburg on Aug 21 to Sept 1. The consignor was Ernst Jung of Hamburg as official comment was not given. Expropriated Mexican oil assets abroad, valued around 400 million dollars, fuel talk of deals with Germany or Japan.
Col. Roscoe Turner, first to win the Thompson trophy twice, plans to spend prize money to develop a plane at least 100 miles per hour faster than the Stellar winner. He set a new Thompson race speed record of 283 mph on the 300 mile course, earning $18,000 plus $4,000 for the record.
The Rock Island Line bridge over the Cimarron near Liberal Kansas was badly damaged when flood waters washed out 40 sections of the Arkalon span. The detour will last at least three days as crews inspect and rebuild.

New York reports large gold shipments headed for the U S treasury vaults as war scare drives capital from Europe. About 24 million dollars of gold arrived on the Queen Mary, the largest influx since the recent European outflow began over a month ago.
The health department weighs economy options while the county offers to fund the unit at 10,000 annually. Last year the unit cost about 65,000 with 34,000 for hospitalization. The city-county unit remains without a director after Dr. B M Primer resigned for a state post.

Pat McCarran seeks renomination in a three way Republican primary with two New Deal opponents. The Nevada race, plus a Democratic gubernatorial contest, is expected to attract a large share of the state’s 55 000 voters. Rim McCarran faces Albert Hillard, Reno attorney, and Dr John Worden of Carson City for the Senate nomination.
Two score officials gathered at noon to revive interest in the giant dam proposed by the late A S Stinnett and tentatively recommended by army engineers years earlier. Conchas Das was approved with the site just west of U S Highway 87 and the Santa Fe Railway to the North Plains.
