A lengthy State Department account accuses Japan of war crimes in the Philippines era. It alleges starvation denial for children, internees deprived of shoes and warm clothing, execution of POWs in the final days, grenades in a sinking ship with 750 captives, a gasoline fire in an air raid shelter holding 150 prisoners, and survivors buried alive.
Indian troops of the First Punjabi Regiment land at Singapore and begin occupation after the 1942 surrender. Fifth Indian Division troops land without opposition, pass Japanese sentries, and liberate Allied prisoners as smoke from Port Dickson oil tanks drifts along the route.
Eighth Army recon squads push into Tokyo to prepare permanent occupation headquarters for the First Cavalry Division led by Maj. Gen. William C. Chase. General MacArthur expected to move into Tokyo with the troops and transfer the HQ from Yokohama.
State Department records detail brutal treatment of American prisoners by Japan including starvation, disease and looting. Protests rose to 240 since the war began, with one shipboard case of a decapitated flyer in New Guinea and the 1944 Philippines prison-ship grenading. The report highlights a single humane act by an unnamed Japanese doctor aboard a prison ship. It notes extensive slaughter of nearly 10,000 Americans in unvisited camps and ongoing uncertainty about missing airmen.
Japanese government spokesmen told the imperial diet that Tokyo sought Soviet mediation last June to save the dying empire. They said the Potsdam ultimatum triggered surrender talks, with Aug. 10 cabinet decision to yield conditionally, while war losses included 51,109 planes and most battleships.
Californians Lt Roy E Stensland and fellow soldiers from the 131st Field Artillery describe grim figures from camps in Java and Thailand. They say 20,000 of 56,000 Allied prisoners died from starvation disease and mistreatment, with 3500 perishing on a 140 mile Thai death march. 133 Americans were among these prisoners.
In Washington a three way clash among the OPA the War Production Board and the National Housing Administration over when to lift building controls has stalled progress on new homes for rural areas. Reconversion chief John Snyder now handles the dispute as demand for houses remains strong and a GI dream house looms in cities.
Local realtors protested OPA proposals to lift most building material controls while keeping housing limits. They warned of a lumber scramble if controls end, possible overuse for non housing projects, and urged stricter prices and permits for house construction. The Amarillo Real Estate Board planned protests and telegrams to President Truman and lawmakers.

Amarillo offers two evening colleges for adults within bus distance. One college provides freshman and sophomore work, the other covers junior to graduate levels. Adults can start from scratch and earn a college diploma by attending classes a few nights weekly.
E. O. Cocke, traffic vice president of TWA, predicts most airline priorities will end by October. He says the War Department moves to reduce and abolish airline priorities will accelerate peacetime business travel and reconversion efforts. An Associated Press dispatch from Tokyo reports American occupation troops distributing aid in Yokosuka. The broadcast lists 36 truckloads of medicine, blankets, tea, flour, wheat, canned goods and dried edible seaweed for citizens, with candy and gum provided to children.
Arthur Kanneberg, chief buyer for Hitler, testified that Hitler gave lavish gifts to his staff but never to Eva Braun, describing him as a piker in gifts to his girlfriend and noting he supplied all buying for the Fuehrer’s household.
In Rome on September 5 a mob seized two Italian girls from an American jeep, stripped them, triggering a wild scene. Allied military police intervened with clubs and police dogs to restore order.

If wheel production does not resume, totals may climb to 40000 across other plants.

President Truman nominated Lt. Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright for a four star promotion. The 62 year old survivor of Japanese imprisonment will arrive in Washington from the Pacific to attend the U S surrender ceremonies aboard the Missouri and had been expected to retire soon.
