Founder Eduard Benes Dies at 64 in Prague

Eduard Benes, key founder and twice president of Czechoslovakia, died at his Serinovo country home at 6:10 pm after a stroke and a long illness. The peasant-born statesman, who helped form the 1918 republic, was 64 and had witnessed the 1948 Communist coup and the death of Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk.

Coke Trailing by 44 Votes In Latest Official Report

Dallas dispatch reports a neck and neck US senate race with Lyndon B. Johnson and Coke R. Stevenson. By noon Johnson led 404 to 404.007 after Jim Wells County pushed Johnson ahead by 202 votes. Stevenson remained 157 votes behind in the latest official tallies as 10 of 18 counties reported. Johnson optimistic and confident victory appeared likely as every vote counted.

Dallas boy dies as ambulance delays trigger probe

The Cole family told a Dallas commissioners court their 8 year old son Leon Cole Jr died after waiting 45 minutes for an ambulance following a Friday bicycle accident. Leaves City Office For Job in Alabama

Clifford L. Davis, organizer of Amarillo's civil service system, resigns as director of the city personnel department effective Sept 15 to move to Birmingham Alabama to manage a cream cone manufacturing company. Davis instituted civil service procedures, created examination systems, organized promotions in police and fire, and helped draft new personnel regulations. His work inspired a model program praised by the Texas League of Municipalities and the University of Texas Bureau of Municipal Research. Davis will be succeeded by city officials as outlined in Davis Page 5.

Jesters Reunited In Gotham

Gov Beauford H. Jester of Texas reunites with his 15 year old half brother Claude after four weeks missing. Claude was found in a New York boardinghouse dispute and later at Roosevelt Hotel. Governor plans to return to Texas and discusses his brother’s future arrangements. The pair plan a long talk about Claude’s plans and support.

Hijacker Identified in Potter County Jail

Davis Scott a 22 year old Negro held on assault with intent to rob Jack Fowlkes after a robbery night Aug 2. Robert A. Mitchell identified him as one of two assailants who stole money a fountain pen and a pencil set during the Sixth and Monroe attack. Captain J L King said Mitchell a letter carrier will have the case presented to the grand jury. Police hold a second Negro for Mitchell robbery inquiry. Scott was charged with the Fowlkes attack and is jailed with a $2000 bond.

Ray Phippeny King of Blackfoot Idaho stepped from a bus into the arms of his twin sister Melba Fay Johnson in Amarillo after a two month search. The five siblings adopted from Chil home, united after 22 years as Marion Ray and others planned a family reunion with their mother Lilly Saul and more relatives arriving in September.

Heat Stirs Weather From Its Doldrums

Heat and thunderstorms sweep the area as Amarillo and nearby towns record sweltering highs around 100 degrees. A severe electrical storm near English Field disrupts power, forcing five airliners to land safely as lines are repaired. Gusts to 35 mph and dust storms created traffic hazards while one ambulance was blown into a ditch but escaped damage.
