Mrs. A S Baker 41 wife of a Boston wool buyer was hit by bird shot while neighbor Charley Sullivan fired from 50 yards thinking she was a thief. Four pellets struck her arm but doctors said no lasting harm. She was searching for a stray police dog when the incident occurred. no charges will be filed.
Los Angeles. Screen actress Molly O'Day is resting in a hospital after an operation to remove several pounds of flesh from her hips and legs. She said excessive weight caused idleness under contract last year and that other methods failed.
Labor Day in Amarillo showed little activity with residents largely at rest or traveling. Police and sheriff offices reported no incidents beyond a lone drunk and a barking dog complaint. Joseph B. Atwood of Clovis New Mexico Opie D Allen and Leon E Allred of Henryetta Oklahoma left for Kelly Field Texas yesterday to enlist in the Air Corps through the local recruiting station at the Federal building.
American flyers Bert Hassell and Parker Cramer were rescued near Mount Evans Greenland after a forced landing. They had survived two weeks in icy wastes on a ration of pemmican and reached safety hungry but in excellent condition.
In Korea on September 1 the governor reported 510 people drowned along the Yalu river basin. Seven hundred houses were destroyed and bridges and roads damaged after heavy rains. Relief measures are under way and a government investigation has begun.
