Sunshine for Confed erate vets brings calm reunion weather

After heavy rain and a cold snap, Amarillo forecasts show sunshine for the Confederate veterans reunion beginning Tuesday with light winds and mild temperatures. Rain totals reach 3.90 inches in the Panhandle region the past week while August moisture hits 5.32 inches. Roads reopen and buses carry delegates as showers may return Friday.

Vanguard of Confederates Arrives for Amarillo Reunion

The vanguard of the United Confederate Veterans from Texas arrives in Amarillo for the 45th U C V reunion, with the national and Sons of Confederate Veterans events opening Tuesday night at Municipal Auditorium. The U S Marine Band arrives, will perform in the reunion and at grand balls, while the President was expected to address by radio in the late program.

SCV chief Water L. Hopkins of Richmond Virginia announces a pleasant profitable SCV convention in Amarillo. The World War veteran and six time Virginia Kentucky Georgia Oklahoma Arkansas Texas staff appointee has been awarded a gold medal and a star gold medal for distinguished historical and patriotic work. He is among the few SCV commanders elected to two terms.

Delayed by late arrival of a special train more than 190 veterans and sons opened the 43rd annual Texas division convention in Amarillo. Col John G Wilson presided in the Red Room at the Amarillo Hotel while schedules set afternoon and evening sessions and speeches by D A Frank and others outlined Texas history and centennial meaning.

Fear Denton Student Vanishes in Suspected Abduction

Robert M. Barnes Jr. a 22 year old North Texas Teachers College student and bank official's son disappeared after leaving the Denton bank at 4 AM. Police fear he was slain or kidnapped as a search spans the city. Luther Allen reports Barnes was seen driving toward his family home before he vanished. A radio alert was issued with a description of Barnes and his new car.

Three Die in Western Air Express Plane Crash

Three people were killed when a Boeing transport crashed after takeoff from Union Air Terminal en route to Salt Lake City. Pilot George C. Sherwood 39 co pilot Fred Burlew 35 and stewardess Donna Naylor 22 died as the plane struck a high tension wire and burned near a ranch. Seventeen sacks of US mail were on board and traffic around the scene was severely disrupted. Firefighters from Burbank Hollywood and Los Angeles fought the blaze for 20 minutes before recovering the remains.

Gun battle at Pelzer mills leaves woman dead

A fierce early morning strike clash at Pelzer Manufacturing Company mills in South Carolina injures at least 15 and claims the life of 21 year old Bertha Kelly. National Guard troops move to quell the violence from Greenville and Greenwood.

Rainwater 17 Dies in Car Roll Near Anson

Earline Rainwater, age 17, was killed when the automobile she rode in overturned three miles west of Anson late last night. The driver was injured and transported to a local hospital. The crash remains under investigation by authorities.

Train Caught in Rock Slide Kills Trainman at Grand Junction

A rock slide on the Denver and Rio Grande Western main line near Grand Junction blocks the railway and costs the life of locomotive fireman Clarence Butler. The incident follows heavy rains loosening earth and rock on the mountainside and a fast freight bound for the eastern slope was derailed. Meanwhile separate note from New York reports the death of 77 year old Charles Dickinson, a Chicago grain firm member and aviation enthusiast, from a heart attack.

Black Sedan Tied to Mrs Ickes Crash in New Mexico

In Santa Fe New Mexico on September 27 investigators pursued a hit and run theory after witnesses recalled a black sedan at the scene of the auto crash that killed Mrs Harold L Ickes wife of a cabinet member. Three survivors Frank Allen Genevieve Forbes Herrick and Ibrahim Seyfullah were hospitalized with pelvic fractures.

Baby Post 10 Be At Reunion

The youngest Sons of Confederate Veterans post in the United States, Michael Beshear Camp in Trinidad, is represented at the Amarillo reunion by its commander John M. Marley Dr John M Beshoar and R K Ralson. The camp formed after Rev Marshall Wingfield urged Trinidad to organize. Drs Beshear own surgeon instruments used by their father in the Confederate Army and note his 85 amputations in one day at Shiloh.
