Higgins Texas Town on Santa Fe Line Grows with War Efforts
Higgins, Texas, first Panhandle town on the Santa Fe main line after leaving Oklahoma, developed from a railhead into a stable agricultural and livestock hub. The 1940 population was 740, with a growing tax base, war bond drives, a small hospital, several grain elevators, a strong Commercial Club, and a high school with a substantial wartime student bond sale.
