Marshall Michigan October 31 Louis E B Brooks a 46 year old Marshall manufacturer and member of a wealthy family was beaten and reported kidnapped by two men and a woman. He was found at his farm home near Battle Creek after claiming his captors forced him to open a safe and helped themselves to a small amount of money. The robbers allegedly escaped after hiding the car key. The attorney James W Mackey rushed to the scene to arrange a statement.
Beery arrives in Juarez en route to Mexico City where his film company will base Viva Pancho Villa on the life of the famed Mexican soldier.
Arthur Brisbane notes Turkey marks ten years of the republic with a three day festival. Parades, pageants, oratorical and athletic events draw 1.5 million participants. Citizens deliver earth in bags to the House of the Republic for a national gift to Mustapha Kemal. Flying machines and 50 million government messages accompany the display. See TODAY Page 12.
Weather bureau reports a small tropical disturbance near Guantanamo Cuba expected to move northeast at about five miles per hour. Gale conditions accompanied the system and vessels in the Windward Passage were cautioned.
Governor Miriam A Ferguson vetoed bills from the special legislative session. Laws validating past tax levies and evidences of city indebtedness were rejected for vagueness. Also disapproved were bills validating independent school districts. Some vetoes cited that validation could extend statewide.
Senate investigators heard Albert H. Wiggin disclose personal corporations lost 5.14 million dollars since 1917 in pools with Chase Securities. He also said his firms loaned 724 thousand dollars to Gerard M. Dahl of the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit and described three Canadian companies formed to seek tax advantages.
George E. Farrell arrives in Amarillo to meet with O. S. Fisher E. A. Miller John R. Edmonds and other officials and county agents to establish a basis for reimbursements to wheat growers who reduce acreage for a set period. The conference continues discussions with county committees across 32 Panhandle counties.
The North Texas migratory waterfowl season opens at noon Wednesday in the North Zone, not at sunrise as previously reported. Goblin wardens will enforce the start time, correcting a misinterpretation of state game laws from yesterday's Globe.
Amarillo youths are invited to a citywide Kiwanis Halloween celebration with six sections and about 300 prizes. Contests begin at 7 pm at Ellwood Park and at school grounds for different age groups, leading to a grand winners’ event at Ellwood Park.
Houston October 31 The governor Miriam A Ferguson backs Texas administration of farm relief funds rather than Farm Credit Administration officials. Two new farm credit agencies the bank for cooperatives and the production credit corporation with 12.5 million capital are being organized by William S Meyers and others with headquarters in Houston.
The Comptroller of the Currency issued a call for the condition of all national banks at the close of business Wednesday October 25. State banks were also asked to show their condition as of October 25 by E. C. Brand the state banking commissioner in Austin.
Secretary Ickes announced the public works board is considering the Fort Supply flood control reservoir in the Oklahoma Panhandle to pair with a water supply project for Oklahoma City. The project would cost about $2.585 million and is among plans urged by Representative Marland of Oklahoma.
Rice Institute Dramatic Club withdraws Uncle Tom's Cabin from full booking after objections by the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The club plans to present Rose of the Southland or The Spirit of Robert E. Lee instead. Lavone Dickensheets, club chairwoman, announced the change following protest by Mrs W W Turner, state president of UDC.
Washington October 31 railroads petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission to cut passenger fares starting December 1 across transcontinental western and southwestern regions. One way coach fares would drop two cents per mile and Pullman up three cents per mile, with Pacific Coast and eastern territories adopting one and a half cents per mile for restricted time tickets. Round trips would be priced at one and one third of the one way first class fare with a 10 day limit, and one and two thirds with a six month limit, excluding California.
Officials at Price Memorial College announce Moon Mullins and the St Bene dicts Ravens of Atchison Kansas will arrive Wednesday instead of Thursday and lodge at Price Memorial. They meet the W T C Buffaloes of Canyon at Butler Field Friday afternoon in the season’s major interterritorial game in the area.
Ferdinand Pecora, counsel for the Senate Banking Committee, said staff will reach Detroit to begin inquiry into closed banks there. Two committee representatives were sent to Detroit and will, after a preliminary inquiry, proceed to Cleveland for a similar investigation.
Washington October 31 The National Automobile Chamber of Commerce announced Ford Motor Company will submit the wage and hours report required by the automobile code on November 6 or 7.
Amarillo and West Texas expect partly cloudy skies tonight and Wednesday. New Mexico shows generally fair conditions with little temperature change. Temperature extremes today reach 56 to 76 degrees.
Amarillo News-Globe reports a community Chest drive to raise 550000 opens Thursday with a kickoff gun. Floyd Studer chairs the drive with H W Galbraith J Levy on the committee. Mrs Earl Wyatt leads the women’s coordination group, and Mrs S F Newbold handles speaking requests.
