In Detroit T E Oliver faced a judge charged with threatening to harm new 1946 model cars with his ancient car. He declared I hate people who own new cars in court.
The Gallup Institute reports that 56 percent of those polled would vote Republican and 44 percent Democratic in the upcoming Congressional elections, signaling a potential Republican control of the House when results are tallied on November 5. The survey, conducted from early September to mid-October, notes an eight-point swing since 1944.
Two young gunmen robbed Harris and Chester Grocery at 210 East Thirty-fourth around 8 am taking about $100. They forced owners P. G. Chester and L. S. Harris to lie down as one held a pistol and the other gathered cash from the register, then fled in a two seat 1940 Ford driven by a woman.
Senators George of Georgia and Sparkman of Alabama pressed immediate decontrol of manufactured cotton goods as the nation’s major cotton exchanges shut for a third time in two weeks after prices slumped about $50 per bale. They urged action while the President said steps to stabilize the market were being explored. The New York and Chicago exchanges closed quickly. Dallas remained open.
Laurence Boyd of 511 North Tyler faced a Potter County grand jury indictment for murder. Judge Henry S. Bishop set bond at 10 000 after a conference with District Attorney Jim Lumpkin and E T Miller, with Boyd held without bond since arrest. Weatherby, a city fireman, died after being shot near the rear of the fire station last Thursday. Boyd surrendered a .45 caliber pistol and declared I have shot a man. The grand jury also handed up five additional indictments before adjourning. jurors convene again today.
Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov energized a United Nations assembly session by proposing a four point arms reduction program. He urged immediate action to curb atomic bomb development and criticized U S veto power and Western troops abroad. Warren R. Austin was set to respond in the session.
The jitterbugs of yesteryear compete in the final round of a dance contest tonight at Amarillo College gymnasium. All advance tickets sold, standing room likely. First-round eliminations start at 7:30 with winners from last night competing for the championship after doors open at 7:00.
Frank Grobel aged 45 was granted a divorce from Jane Grobel aged 40 after he testified she had beaten him with a nailed stick. Judge Leonard C. Reid approved a $40,000 property settlement, Grobel saying he would rather give her everything than endure daily abuse.
R Martin Stover Tuley a 32 year old Van Alstyne farmer and ex convict charged with rape kidnapping and armed robbery denied involvement in the Wylie attack claiming he was poker playing at the time. He is held without bond awaiting grand jury action while Texas Rangers investigate possible Texarkana phantom killer links.
Lincoln White of the State Department cited a preliminary letter on the subject and said War Department planners want no action until more details are reviewed. Army Air Forces officers had said they were ready to launch within days if approved.
Philip Bowers an 11 year old from Kansas City Missouri died after two weeks of prayer for healing at home led by the In the Name of Jesus Church. Doctors cited rupture bladder or respiratory failure as the cause. The mother insisted on prayer over hospital care and the congregation prayed at the boy's bedside.
The Amarillo area and West Texas expect slightly cooler today and tonight with warmer conditions on Thursday. Partly cloudy in West Texas this afternoon through Thursday with scattered showers east of the Pecos. cooler in the Panhandle tonight and on Thursday. New Mexico sees fair weather today through Thursday with cooler eastern and southern portions tonight. Temperatures include a high of 79, a low of 56, and noon at 72.
