Allied forces in the Philippines repelled the first organized Japanese counter attack and expanded their hold on Leyte Island. They pushed a 35 mile coastal zone inland to a depth of 10 miles, establishing three airfields and controlling at least 28 towns and villages.
Amarillo sailor Nelson Page from Golden Sandstorm high school may have served aboard the U S S Princeton, sunk in the ongoing Leyte operation. Navy dispatches say the Princeton’s captain and 1,360 officers and men were saved, with about 1,500 crew aboard at loss. Amarillo and vicinity remains fair tonight with Thursday partly cloudy skies and little temperature change. Washington October 25. Slaughter of about 34 million cattle is proposed as the 1945 goal by the War Food Administration meat goals committee. The body also kept spring pig crop goals near 1944 levels and noted current estimates show about 33 million cattle slaughtered this year, short of the 33.7 million target, affecting record 82 million head on farms by January 1, 1944.
German evacuation of Kirkenes in Norway follows destruction of bases as Soviet forces push toward the Norwegian border. Red Army penetrates Poland toward East Prussia while Berlin reports a widening Russian advance along the Narew and Niemen fronts. British and Canadian troops drive in Holland, nearing Tilburg and Bergen op Zoom, with German defenses stiffening ahead of the Reich collapse.
