In Muskogee Oklahoma on October 25 jurors split nine to three for acquittal and resumed their deliberations in the Lathe Rey Stephen Althea Ber le poison murder trial of 52 year old minister Lathe Berrie accused of killing his wife last March after alleged illicit relations with a teenage girl whom he later wed. Prosecutors say he poisoned her with uremic poison and that the minister drank and lied about his past while his defense argues lack of proof about any poisoning and accuses persecution by men. The first Mrs Berrie died after taking a sedative capsule believed by the state to be poisoned.
Alfred E. Smith denounces the Republican Party as the party of bigotry deceit and hypocrisy calling Hoover a dry leader. He cites Mabel Willebrandt and Col. Donovan and accuses the party of underhanded votes and Farm Board loans while urging a Roosevelt Garner victory to revive prosperity. He speaks to 15,000 inside and 35,000 listening outside the 113th Infantry armory.
