Frail Fay Hancock faces a second devastating blaze at her cafe on East Third Street ten months after opening Faye's Cafe. Burglars plagued the business, ransacking the place 11 times, causing repeated losses and damage. A 2 a.m. refrigerator fire added to the woes before firefighters arrived.
Amarillo United Red Feather campaign began strongly with 58,060 raised by noon toward a 165,886 goal. At a Crystal Ballroom breakfast, 250 workers heard leaders note divisions reporting progress from 23 to 59 percent. Eleven leaders include Eugene Dennis and others. ten jailed on bail pending appeal, others convicted face five years or three years.
Marie Carney remains in stable condition at Clovis Memorial Hospital after being shot in the left breast Saturday at her sister’s home. Jewel H. Gilmore, identified as the shooter, was found dead in his car from carbon monoxide poisoning, a note signed by him found inside. Witnesses say Gilmore visited the Throckmorton home, a scream followed by two gunshots, and Elmo Privett reportedly disarmed him. Funeral services for Gilmore will be held at Steed Funeral Home with time pending.
