He also forecasts rapid air travel and comments on religious repression in Russia.
Edward Maples was blown into a mud hole when a boiler at an oil well test near Pampa exploded. The blast sent him 75 yards through the air. he escaped with minor injuries. Some boiler pieces cut the town’s electric line, prompting an emergency power setup.
A sunny day across Amarillo and the Panhandle gave way to a forecast of frost tonight. The Weather Bureau warned of frost in exposed areas for Amarillo tomorrow, with clear skies tonight and tomorrow. Heavy rains were reported south of Amarillo including Quanah, Childress, and Plainview. Between Lubbock and Clovis precipitation ranged from one to two inches.
The 66 year old Hdna Wallace Hopper, famed flapper, performed with partner M. Grip of Paris aboard a liner to New York. They have completed a year of engagements abroad, and Hopper notes she has not celebrated a birthday since 1926, claiming 62 summers.
Harold English, manager of English Field, and Otis Williams, aviation enthusiast, pleaded guilty to violating neutrality laws by exporting airplanes to Mexican rebels during uprisings over a year ago. Each was fined 1000 dollars by Judge James C. Wilson. sentence on a conspiracy count deferred for three years on good behavior.
President Hoover will appoint within a few days a national timber conservation board to recommend a public policy and if necessary legislation to carry it through.
At a Chicago conference of over 40 leading industrialists and educators, speakers assert a turning point in the economy without a rapid recovery. They call the development a step toward a more solid future, with optimism tempered by realism. L. J. Tabor, head of the National Grange, notes agriculture turning a corner despite drought and low prices, shifting reliance from government to farmers.
In Adena Ohio a Wheeling and Lake Erie train tunnel cave trapped three train crew members. Jerry L Sells 40 of Dillonvale died. E E Duga 35 and Romando 35 are believed dead. The 25 car train backed into the tunnel as rescuers communicated with Romando amid collapsed wreckage.
Tickets for the Mary Garden concert at City Auditorium on Monday night November 3 are on sale at Wilbur C. Hawk's Globe News office. Prices range from $1 to $3, with tickets secured by check or money order. Auspices Tri-State Fair and Wilbur C. Hawk president.
Amarillo officials urge an auspicious start for direct air mail on transcontinental runs beginning October 26. Mayor Ernest C. Thompson cites faster communication with New York and the West Coast, with mail times cut dramatically from rail. A commemorative program, led by the mayor and Postmaster W. C. Kenyon, is planned at English Field.
The Associated Press reports a colder snap with Dallas forecast to dip to 40 degrees. Laredo rainfall increased to 2.15 inches amid continuing heavy showers.
On October 23 in Washington two witnesses testified that Herbert M. Campbell resembled the man seen struggling with a girl in a car near 16th and B Streets on April 11. They could not positively identify Campbell, noting the man had dark hair and wore a hatless appearance, while Campbell remained unperturbed.
Amarillo voters may see Communist candidates on November 4 for Texas governor. J. Stedham leads with undetermined address, while J. L. Swan and W. A. Berry seek lieutenant governor and U S senator. The general ballot lists four parties plus a write in option. See COMMUNISTS Page 2.
Mrs. Pearl O Loughlin wife of a Denver detective sobbed during interrogation and said I alone am to blame for the death of 10 year old Leona O Loughlin whose body was found in a city park lake.
Fort Worth police hunt two 13-year-olds Nona McNealy and Anna Lynch believed held by two men in a sedan. Dallas officers alerted local authorities after the girls left Dallas with two boys and another girl. They were seen near the Dallas Fort Worth pike and later reported to police that the car headed toward Fort Worth. No license plate or vehicle found yet.
Amarillo officials argued at city hall that state aid for the North Fillmore Street subway would be possible only if plans increase clearance from 10 to 15 feet. Mayor Col Ernest O. Thompson noted the highway commission’s hesitation centered on the 10 foot clearance and said a 15 foot load could use crossings on either side. If required, deeper gradings would raise damage claims by abutting property owners, potentially offsetting one third of the $176000 construction cost. Judge W R Ely of the state highway commission expressed cautious willingness to cooperate.
Chicago reports George Bugs Moran former North Side gang leader was released on bond after a friend posted 10000 cash to the municipal court. Attorney Kane confirmed the release saying Moran signed to secure his freedom to await a further hearing before Judge John H. Lyle.
Nova Iguassu dispatch reports Dona Rosa Marianna Da Costa died aged 150 in Rio de Janeiro state. She left four children all over 100, plus 124 grandchildren, 240 great grandchildren and fourteen great great grandchildren.
Captain Bert Clark says Pearl O Loughlin confessed after six and a half hours of questioning that she alone caused the death of her ten year old step-daughter Leona whose mutilated body was found in Berkeley Park Lake on October 21. The confessing mother collapsed mentally and physically during processing.
Denver October 24 Frank O Loughlin brother of Detective Lee O Loughlin is to be questioned in connection with the slaying of his 10 year old daughter. Details continue on page 2.

A White House conference with President Hoover’s aides led to plans for a new relief organization, drafting qualified workers, and locating jobs nationwide with Commerce Department headquarters forthcoming.
