Poultry Growers Propose End to Poultryless Thursdays

The nations poultrymen urged President Truman's food committee to scrap poultryless Thursdays proposing a substitute program to save 30 million bushels of grain for Europe by April 1. Assistant Secretary Brannan predicted a swift end to the ban possibly within 24 hours if growers accept grain conservation in exchange. The offer was sent to Committee Chairman Charles Luckman who rejected the initial substitute.

Poultrymen propose grain-saving plan to Luckman

The poultrymen outlined a plan to cut broiler numbers 25 percent, trim egg-laying flocks, and reduce overall poultry throughputs to conserve grain. Jinx Tucker Hospitalized After Serious Heart Attack

H. H. "Jinx" Tucker, dean of southwestern sports writers, was reported in serious condition in a Waco hospital. He felt chest pain Saturday while climbing to the press box at Ownby Stadium in Dallas and continued to cover the Rice-SMU game, suffering a heart attack last night.

Defense rests in Ross case in Texas trial

LA GRANGE October 21 defense rests in the Ross murder trial. Dr W J Johnson San Antonio psychiatrist testified that Dr Lloyd I Ross was insane on May 25 the date of the four York family killings on a Comal County road. Johnson said Ross remains insane and described a paranoiac mental condition.

Veteran actor Adolphe Menjou and critic John Charles Moffitt testified before the House committee on Un American Activities that Communists are active in Hollywood. They named John Howard Lawson as a Communist leader and claimed Broadway and publishing houses are infiltrated. Menjou urged outlawing the Communist party and labeling propaganda films.

45 Minute Electrical Blackout Hits Amarillo

Amarillo suffered a citywide electrical blackout starting at 8 25 this morning and lasting about 45 minutes. Power was restored to sections within 10 to 15 minutes, with no injuries reported even at the plant or Northwest Texas Hospital where emergency lighting aided surgeries. The outage stemmed from a flashing electrical fire behind the main switchboard at the Amarillo power plant during switching operations. A baby was reportedly born at St Anthony s Hospital during the outage.

President's Daughter Margaret Truman Schedules Amarillo Concert

Margaret Truman daughter of President Truman will appear in concert November 7 at Amarillo Municipal Auditorium. Her early success has marked her as a promising soprano with a Hollywood Bowl appearance and a national radio debut with the Detroit Symphony. A reception will follow the concert and invitations accompany tickets. She is booked through the Panhandle Concert Bureau.

West Texas remains generally fair, and New Mexico sees partly cloudy skies with scattered showers in northern mountains. Overnight lows around 35 in mountains and 45 to 55 elsewhere. highs reaching 75 in the northwest and up to 90 in the southwest. Local measurements show 84 maximum in the last 24 hours, 57 minimum, and 83 at noon.

Bermuda Hurricane Damage Tops Million Dollars

The Bermuda hurricane weakening from 120 mph to under 50 mph caused over one million dollars in damage. Ten buildings lost roofs, hundreds of trees were uprooted, and the island’s power and telephone service were nearly cut off.

Amarillo Plans New Traffic Arteries To Relieve Congestion

O H Koch of Koch & Fowler presented a preliminary Amarillo traffic study to the Planning and Zoning Commission. He proposed cross town arteries using existing streets with some changes to reduce local bottlenecks and improve direct routes to the business district and industrial zones.

Diamond-studded watch stolen from Amarillo Jewelry Co

Police investigate the theft of a diamond-studded watch valued at about six thousand dollars. The watch was reported stolen after noon yesterday from the Amarillo Manufacturing Jewelry Company on Polk street. The company is operated by Ray L. McDermott of Hayden address 2214.
