Each time the robber asks for a bake shop stop, a confectionery visit, or coffee, and the officer finally tests his trust by going inside alone. In New York on October 21, Chief Scout James E. West announced to the national executive board that the Boy Scouts added 18.888 members to reach a total personnel count of 1,083,997 for the year ended September 30, marking an all time high.

Mrs. Fred Annen, 30, died at home in Claude after illness of several weeks. Survived by husband, daughter Johnnie Fae 4, son Jim 3, and sister Mrs Roy Williams of Alburnette Iowa. Family lived in Claude 12 years. Body brought to Griggs Panema! Home. Funeral arrangements pending.
Texas safety officials report September highway crashes killed 189 people and sent 1392 to hospitals. Despite 27 more accidents than August the death toll rose by two and injuries by 446. Pedestrians totaled 42 deaths as speeds and traffic flow drew concern with new license law and more patrols to cover the state network. Captain Berry announced efforts to curb Panhandle accidents.
Roger Norton of Cleveland testified that John Montague the Hollywood golfer was part of the four man crew that robbed Kin Hana's roadhouse in 1930. Norton served two years in prison for the crime.
Bill McDavid of 2100 Fillmore Street was among 19 Texas Tech students chosen for Who's Who Among American University and College Students selections. A Amarillo High School graduate his mother heads the English department he is president of S P E C and represented the organization at Austin Tech chapter joined Tau Beta Pi. His brother Earl is a Tech freshman this year.
Police report a petty theft of candy from a store on East Tenth Avenue in Amarillo while handling out-of-town requests. Tucumcari asks to look for a stolen car, Clovis seeks two runaway boys aged 12, Lonney Tugh Jr and Wayne, with limited descriptions, and Wichita Falls requests a forgery suspect.
Providence report says two men attempted to kidnap the 18 month old son of Rhode Island secretary of state Louis W. Cappelli after threatening the maid. They fled in a green sedan.
Owens-Illinois announces a new glass cloth made from threads so fine that 140000 yards weigh one pound. The filmy strands can be woven into pliable fabric that resists moisture and endures normal chemical action on organic matter, with commercial marketing expected within a year.
Washington October 21 Director Robert Fechner announced the Civilian Conservation Corps will reach full strength of 300000 men. He said 133000 new enrollees have been added by October, bringing the corps to capacity.
Secretary Swanson announced the keel of the battleship North Carolina will be laid at the New York navy yard next Wednesday Navy Day. Georges Michel of France set a record by swimming the English Channel in 11 hours and minutes.

Amarillo fire crews rushed to two incidents within five minutes of each other. In Cincinnati on October 21 the state heard A. O. Spriggs a Springfield chemist testify that a hardening embalming compound used on Jacob Wagner was free of poison later found in his body. Judge Bell signaled that proving this would show Wagner died of poison at the hands of Anna Marie Hahn a 78 year old acquaintance.
G men announced a woman found the first of the $50,000 ransom in the attempted kidnapping case of Charles H. Ross, the 72 year old Chicagoan kidnapped in a high profile abduction. The discovery was reported from Chicago with authorities confirming the ongoing probe.
A Portales escapee identified as Bill Cooper, held on a felony theft charge, was arrested in Electra Texas after fleeing during questioning. Local officers pursued, three shots were fired without hits, and New Mexico authorities planned to fetch the prisoner.
Treasury officials said the Christmas buying season will likely boost redemptions of veterans' bonus bonds. The program is currently cashing about 1.6 million dollars weekly as buyers redeem prior issues.
City building permits issued for two new homes in Amarillo. Each home valued at $5,000, bringing monthly construction near $90,000. Wayne Sawyers will build brick veneer residence at 1705 Jackson St for Henry D. Baker, and C R Farra will construct a frame dwelling at 3006 Harrison St for Walter R. Irwin.
Attendants at Northwest Texas Hospital report Wade Picketts remains in critical condition after a taxi office fight, with doctors fearing paralysis if he survives. Cab driver Robert Lewis was charged with assault with intent to murder in connection with the shooting.
