Two More Die In Car Wrecks In Panhandle

Two more deaths were added to Panhandle highway tolls as yesterday’s crashes left three people dead and another seriously injured. Carson County farmer Jerry Sanford Johnson, 63, died at Conway after his car was broadsided on Highway 66. Tulia operator R N Randel, 35, died when his car rolled five miles south of Tulia. Joe Poe, who was riding with Randel, was seriously injured but expected to survive. A Roswell, New Mexico man identified as J B Smith was detained for questioning pending further investigation. Johnson had hurried to fetch a nurse for a sick child when his vehicle was struck crossing Highway 66. He leaves a wife and three daughters.

Potter County Grand Jurors Call For Hardened Jail Bars

Potter County grand jurors urge stronger jail bars after jail escapes. The panel says window bars should be case hardened to save on guards. They found the jail on the seventh and eighth floors of the courthouse in excellent sanitary condition. Three inmates escaped last week via barred cells and a blanket rope. David Ash Alvin Ash and George Gray remain at large. The grand jury also visited the county farm west of Amarillo and deemed conditions satisfactory under the circumstances.

Sheriff and police departments announce action against gambling devices disguised as marble machines following a grand jury report. The term investigations found machines like marble machines punch boards and tip books displayed for public use in many businesses citywide. Officials ordered immediate confiscation of the devices.
