Gen. Jacob F. Wolters warns that reopening wells could spark armed resistance and a shutdown by force. He claims broad civilian support for current controlled operations.
Federal Judge Merrill E. Otis found the sale of unfermented grape concentrate intended for brewing alcohol violated national prohibition. Ukiah Grape Products Co. was fined $100 per count and ex-manager Albert Brunett faced $40 per count. Brunett acquitted on two counts.

Hugh Herndon Jr and Clyde Pangborn, who flew the first nonstop Pacific crossing from Japan to the United States in a red monoplane, departed Omaha Municipal Field for Columbus at 9 05 A M. They expect to reach Columbus about 3 P M.
In Beverly Hills an 18 year old heiress Florence McAllister married taxi driver Edward Challette after he expertly piloted a taxi that impressed her. The couple, now married for weeks, bought a 55000 home and 37500 in furnishings. Mrs Challette is daughter of the late Florence McAllister who left 3 million in oil lands to three children. Her income from the lands reportedly 240000 yearly. They have kept to their home and declined interviews.
Huey P. Long Paul H. Cyr and Walter L. Aldrich clash in a dramatic dispute over who holds the Louisiana governorship. Long's Senate certification last November sparks a bid by Cyr to assume the office while Cyr resigns as lieutenant governor. A spectacular legal fight looms to determine the rightful occupant of the state capitol.
The Community Chest campaign for 65000 in Amarillo reports 15297.46 in cash and pledges at last night’s check-up, with four civic clubs and the American Legion gearing up for a final push next week. Fred DeCoster, Chest secretary manager, praises local effort and notes many pledges are in cash. a full weekly report will be released Sunday morning after 392 solicitors submit results.
Austin October 16 Ross Sterling opened a two day state conference on unemployment condemning the dole system. He quoted John Smith of the Virginia settlement saying a man who would not work should not eat, but urged furnishing work so he can eat. He said the highway department plans to spend funds to maximize employment. Dr J W E Beck of Dekalb was elected chairman. About 150 men from across the state attended the opening sessions with more expected later.
The Amarillo forecast calls for fair weather tonight and Saturday with warmer conditions. West Texas expects fair skies with colder southeast areas tonight and warmer conditions by Saturday. the northern portion remains warm. New Mexico shows fair tonight and Saturday with little temperature change.
Marlin October 164 The Reichstag sustained Chancellor Heinrich Bruening's cabinet by a 294 to 270 confidence vote. The economy party with 20 votes aided the chancellor who met the verdict with calm as Finance Minister Dietrich and General Groener smiled.
Dallas report says the trial of John W. Bowen on forgery charges in Travis County will be postponed due to a crowded docket. Bowen was indicted over forged witness fee vouchers. Porter Barnes, a former deputy district clerk, faced similar charges and killed himself at his lakeside home near Tyler as investigators closed in.
Injuries from an automobile collision near Emhouse led to the death today of Henry E. Burt 58 a farmer. He was struck by a vehicle two weeks earlier and died at local hospital.
Thomas McMillan a 15 year old Lubbock High School senior died in a local hospital from a broken neck suffered during gymnastics practice at the school gym Wednesday. He was injured in a collision with a classmate while doing a back somersault. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam B. McMillan. Funeral services will be held Saturday in Whitewright.
The Wellman Company of Cleveland reports a 15 percent salary increase for all employees as sales rise. First nine months 1931 revenues climbed 20 percent from 1930, despite a 24 percent price cut in January. Measured in feet, product sales grew 48.9 percent year over year.
Edison remains in a quiet sleep under medical care in West Orange. Dr. Hubert Howe reported the inventor's pulse weaker but not critical after the morning exam and said the end may come at any time.
Waco officials protest shift of the 1932 state medical convention to Amarillo after a Beaumont meeting. Potter County Medical Society and local chamber oppose the change while Waco officials, led by Dr. E L Wedemeyer, urge unity if Amarillo remains the chosen site. Waco received 26 votes to Fort Worth 28 and Amarillo 44 in initial tallies.
San Francisco reports the Japanese freighter Yonan Maru, 6000 tons with 40 to 50 crew, was sinking after distress calls. The liner President Jefferson attempted a radio contact with the stricken ship around 6 am, as water flooded the hold. Yonan Maru had departed Portland for Shanghai on September 30. Colonel and Mrs. Lindbergh were passengers aboard the President Jefferson, which was about 65 miles away.
Robert Brassell failed to appear in Dallas court to prosecute two men Jeannie Leslie and Jack Darby accused of kidnapping and beating him. Brassell claimed the attackers believed he was a police stool pigeon and had disclosed Dallas gamblers activities. The defendants appeared with counsel on aggravated assault charges.
Don Moyle the transpacific flier must report to Los Angeles County Jail on November 2 to serve a 30 day sentence for driving a motor car while intoxicated. He pleaded guilty July 15 and Judge B R Schauer granted an extension of the execution date from October 1. Moyle had asked for two weeks more to enjoy his flight with Cecil Allen from Tokyo to America.
Havre France October 16 Premier Pierre Laval and a staff of financial experts sailed aboard the Ile De France for the United States where he will discuss important world problems with President Hoover.
Bishop James Cannon Jr of the Methodist Episcopal Church South says he is not surprised by indictment for conspiracy to violate the federal corrupt practices act. He learned of the DC grand jury action after leaving a bishops meeting and plans to read dispatches before issuing a statement.
Dr. L. W. Hollis Sr. a pioneer West Texas physician, died at his Abilene home after a lengthy illness. He was 76 years old.
