Nearly 200 locals welcome Democratic vice presidential candidate Charles W. Bryan at Santa Fe station in Amarillo at six in the morning. W. C. Kenyon and Jeff D. Bartlett greet him as others, including Mrs. Lloyd Fletcher and Ira Aten, mingle with travelers and Democrats and Republicans share light banter.
Plans to form a camp of Spanish American War Veterans in Amarillo set for 7 30 tonight in the Longhorn room of the Amarillo hotel. W A Duke national aide de camp will lead the meeting and promote a strong turnout for all veterans. He recently organized Eastern New Mexico veterans in Roswell and reports officers elected there.
Adjutant General Thomas D. Barton announced a state ranger guard will accompany the fifty million dollar Mexican bond issue printed in Austin for broker J. L. Arlitt and shipped to New York.
Valery Brusoff, Russia's leading poet of the past decade, died of pneumonia on October 10 at age fifty. The government had proposed a lifelong pension and housing on his fifty first birthday. He founded a symbolic poetry school and translated Shakespeare Poe Whitman and Greek poets into Russian.
Plans laid six months ago for a campaign slogan to spread through agricultural states were carried out in Alva Oklahoma where Bryan spoke. Seventy five pipes bearing the slogan were given to Rotary Club members and other prominent citizens at the meeting. Bryan has not used tobacco for several years.
Amarillo and McLean athletes and boosters gather at Bivins stadium for a major football clash this afternoon at four o clock. The McLean crowd numbers about 400 as both teams seek victory using all fair plays. Nearby, the Panhandle audience eyes Canyon where WTST Buffaloes face NUNM and Canyon HS meets Tulia.
The Army blimp TC-2, the largest nonrigid fighter aircraft built in the United States, was badly damaged and several crew members injured when a bomb it carried exploded in the air over Langley Field near Newport News on October 16.
Friedrichshafen Oct 10 Thirty two persons will be on board the ZR 3 when the giant dirigible departs for Lakehurst New Jersey for the U S Navy. Dr Hugo Eckener says two mechanics have been added bringing the crew to twenty eight Germans and four Americans. Ten watchmen guard the ship to prevent stowaways until departure.
Genevieve McDonnell a department store sales girl in Los Angeles received notice she inherited 55000 from her late godfather James Conner who died September 3. The bequest was given as a reward for kindness to Conner. She comes from a family of seven. her father was a San Francisco policeman. The Coffees Shop at the Amarillo Hotel is famous for food.
In Amarillo at 515 Polk street a waitress, Bessie Sommers 24, was shot four times and died at Northwest Texas hospital. Billie Meek 19 surrendered held in jail charged with the shooting declaring I had to do it to protect my home. Meek says the killing was in response to jealousy over Sommers and her husband.
Washington reports the body of former President Woodrow Wilson will be removed from Bethlehem chapel crypt at Washington Cathedral and placed in a marble sarcophagus in the chapel for the time being. The sarcophagus, designed by cathedral architects under Mrs. Wilson's order, should be finished within a month and bears a simple design with a crusader sword relief on the cover.
On board the U S 8 Shenandoah the dirigible rockets through tunnels of canyon wind at 74 miles per hour. The craft climbed to 6806 feet amid moonlit peaks and skimmed near jagged summits while gas expands and engines push 1500 horsepower in a tense high altitude passage.
The forecast calls for unsettled weather tonight and Saturday with rain possible. Sunday should be cooler after a high near 75 today and a low around 47, compared with last year’s 68 and 57.
Washington defeated the New York Giants 4 to 3 in 12 innings to claim the world baseball championship. Walter Johnson relieved in the ninth and shut out the Giants, while McNeeley drove in the tying run with a double in the 12th, as 36,000 fans including President Coolidge watched a dramatic coronation of Washington’s first pennant and world title.
