Drizzling weather pushed the Panhandle into a fourth day of steady rain. Total rainfall reached 5.35 inches for the spell and 18.46 inches for the year, moving the area from sub normal to above normal precipitation through October 6. Seagulls glided over damp shores as skies stayed gray.
Four day rains across the Panhandle fail to beat the U S Weather Bureau’s 54 year records as May threatens a new all time high while showers continue. Flooding strands hundreds of cars in Bushland and halts portions of rail service with trains delayed and underpasses flooded.
The Florida west coast faced hurricane warnings up to Cedar Keys as a tropical storm with winds over 100 mph pushed from the Gulf of Mexico, endangering the state's $100 million citrus harvest.
A Sunshine Special passenger train crashed into a crowded El Paso city bus early today killing two and injuring about 35. The bus carried around 60 passengers en route to Texas College of Mines. Listed dead include Gonzalo Carlos Jr. and Jesus Castillo with several others injured. The lengthy dispatch also notes hurricane forecasts and historic Florida storms before reporting Tokyo approving a pacifist constitution.

He served in the Seventh Army since 1944 and returned to work a month ago. doctors say he has over a dozen perforations from metal fragments.
The Navy reported Cordell Hull, former Secretary of State, shows continued improvement after a cerebral hemorrhage suffered a week ago and appears out of immediate danger.
Walter Johnson once a pitching ace for the Washington Senators is reported in very grave condition with a brain tumor. The baseball legend known as the Big Train has been confined to Georgetown Hospital since April after a stroke.
The shrimp boat Bertha Lee remains missing as of early today with a crew of three after disappearing Wednesday night near Beaumont. The owner, Alvin Leblanc, confirms no report of the vessel or crew has surfaced.
Paris dispatch reports Premier Jan Smuts urging an early Big Three meeting to halt the perilous East-West bloc divide. He warned the wartime alliance must not collapse into rival camps and called for open discussion to restore unity before the conference ends. Connally opened the plenary session on the Italian treaty draft.
Communist counter attack drives Nationalists back from Hwailai southeast of Kalgan as one column reaches Kalgan then retreats. Reports say Nationalist forces suffered a defeat in the Hwailai area.
A rural mailman in Amarillo, A. C. McKay, found a note and eggs in a mailbox for postage. He sold the eggs for stamps and fulfilled the request, continuing a 50 year legacy of rural mail service. Three carriers operate from Amarillo post office, covering 60 miles daily for over 500 customers. McKay’s route lies west and southwest of Amarillo with Wilson and Hall on other sectors.
W. Averell Harriman was sworn in as Secretary of Commerce using the late Hugh Johnson’s Bible. The 54 year old former ambassador to Great Britain succeeds Henry A. Wallace after President Truman fired Wallace on September 20 over foreign policy criticisms. Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson administered the oath.

Jackson 909 Louisiana for a porcupine capture.
