Three federal prohibition officers in Danville Kentucky engaged in a gun battle with alleged rum runners on a highway near Danville. An alleged rum runner was killed and another wounded as three negroes in a powerful automobile targeted the officers. The officers escaped unharmed and used the criminals vehicle to tow away the wounded prisoner and the wrecked car to town.
Army orders issued today show President Hoover's decentralization plan for inland and Great Lakes waterways will be put into effect at once through transfer of engineer corps officers. The Associated Press reports from Washington on October 7.
Washington October 7 Senator Morris Sheppard Democrat of Texas introduced a bill to amend the Volstead Act to make the purchase of intoxicating liquor for beverage purposes illegal and to render the purchaser liable alongside manufacturers and sellers. The measure goes to the judiciary committee amid limited odds of action in the special session. President Hoover may push prohibition service reforms in December, possibly affecting consideration of the proposal.
